And he keeps winning. But that's not anywhere close to the truth. He's miscalculated Trump badly, and his own personal vendetta moves are starting to cost him. Here's a good piece about how he's not winning at all, and that he is, in fact, floundering.

Let's not forget McCain was laying off staff and packing up his campaign HQ before going on to take the nomination...
...but I don't see how DeSantis turns it around. At least, he hasn't shown any flashes of brilliance to be able to do it. He tried to out-Trump Trump, while saying he's different from Trump, and there's just no outdoing the master of that brand. So he's not going to peel-off Trump voters, and he's alienated everybody else.
Which is fine with me. He's an authoritarian even worse than Trump because Trump was just going with his gut, and DeSantis is calculated with it. I'd still rather have DeSantis than Trump (on a pure anti-corruption angle), but at this point I think I'd rather a good-enough Democrat than DeSantis.

He could. The biggest opportunity DeSantis is going to have is due to Trump's legal woes. There is an absolute mountain of legal sh!t, both civil and criminal, descending on Donald Trump...and it's been proven again and again and again that Trump is absurdly easy to beat in an actual courtroom if you can actually get him inside of one. Mostly because he's almost always guilty as sin, he's impulsive and willful as a three-year-old, and he can't tell a coherent story, much less the actual truth, to save his own life. He also disregards any advice his lawyers give him and tends to throw them under the bus in ways that get them disbarred...and then stiff them on the legal bill.
But the thing is, I don't know if I see Trump behind bars before 2024. The timeline seems to be late 2024-early-2025 until the inevitable endless chain of appeals on these cases is finally exhausted. At which point it is just way, way too late for the GOP to salvage the 2024 election.
DeSantis needs to hope for speedy and efficient justice. Which is usually a contradiction in terms.

Correct. Trump would have to drop out...
May 17, 2023, 8:16 AM
|

...which as you said is not an insignificant possibility. Trump's track record if you get him in Court is abysmal, and the man is gonna be in a lot of different ones over the next few months.
EDIT: And I agree with your timeline for criminal prosecution, but what I see as a possibility is that the legal challenges become such a slog, Trump loses his energy on the campaign trail because he can't manage both, as well as realizing his 2024 run isn't providing the legal cover he thought it would and throws in the towel to make sure he doesn't spend much of the remaining days he has in jail or fighting off more threats.

That's certainly some Trump-level logic, but I think the emotional burden of a growing number of cases and his growing track record of losing them is going to wear him down. But then again, it's usually a solid bet to take Trump as Trump, and stop trying to give him the benefit of a rational mind.

Don't see how that's attack. Some folks here pump a lot of DeSantis sunshine BS (RPMcMurphy) and act like he's "winning," but he's really losing quite badly. Trump is crushing the guy, and DeSantis's own actions--that the "winning" people celebrate--are likely going to cost him a chance.
DeSantis's are more about show or getting revenge on someone, which isn't good political policy. He's also sticking a big middle finger toward a large segment of the voting population, which is going to hurt him in the long run.
That's why we need someone who is more of adult, like Haley.

I don't like authoritarian leaders, particularly those who embrace Trump's neo-fascist ways. But I was also hoping maybe someone could remove Trump altogether from the equation, but DeSantis seems incapable of that. Either way, he's a carry over from the Trump childishness and he's bad for America. We need a Haley and an adult in the room.

I don't think I called him names despite his actual name opening the doors to several clever alterations, but I did gloat over the Disney stuff mainly to fire back at those who claim conservatism but actually backed big government, and to see a private entity keep winning free speech battles against an authoritarian who backs government overreach.
When a man who thinks he's a little despot gets his comeuppance, it's always fun to watch.

He should’ve announced his candidacy months ago. Now he appears reactionary and weak.
I think he would be a much better candidate than Trump, but DeSantis won’t catch up to Trump unless Trump drops out.
