But, I would advise young people to go to a technical or trade school today.
- Get a better education
- Get a more practical education
- Get a more useful education
- Save money
- Be taught by better people and not be surrounded by the utter insanity that pervades colleges and universities today
- Leave a better and more adjusted person

My daughter recently graduated from UF, WSJ’s #1 public university, and out-of-state cost there is much lower than Clemson’s out-of-state. I don’t see how Clemson competes for students outside of SC.

It all depends on what you want to do career wise. Many careers require at least a 4 year degree.
You can earn a good wage and have a rewarding career with a Tech education, but you will be somewhat limited in the career fields.

Better people? Really? Better people.
My mother was a college professor - she had 2 advanced degrees from Clemson and a doctorate from UGA. You would be hard pressed to find a better person on this planet. I just wonder who gave you the job of ranking people?
And as for you giving advice, given your 62% on this board, obviously (and thank goodness) no one really cares what you say.

Rather than keeping Clemson a nice mid-sized school, and thus continuing to raise the school's academic profile by accepting a higher caliber of student, Clemson instead decided to increase enrollment significantly.
I understand that the university wanted to capitalize on the increasing demand today for a college education, and also benefit from increased revenue from tuition, but I feel that this was a big mistake. The Clemson experience is far different than it was even 10-15 years ago. While Clemson is still a great school, it is moving farther away from what it could be.
I'd prefer to have seen Clemson maintain enrollment around 18,000, rather than ballooning to 25,000+. That would have kept the faculty-student ratio lower, lowered our acceptance rate, and improved our graduation rate compared to what it is now.

Instead of committing to have a championship basketball program, Clemson continues to employ Brad Brownell. Seemingly accepting their place as a “middle of the pack” basketball school

CU Admin has gone for the $$ with added enrollment. I think they strive to be a Big10-like school, but you can't out BIG the BIG. If we want excellence, which I'm not sure we do, then we need a different strategy than big, large State school.

Clemson can never be one of the best public universities (as in top 10) if we continue to grow enrollment. By mostly relying on students from a smaller state - and a state which doesn't exactly rank well in public education - we are fighting an uphill battle.
Schools like Michigan and Ohio State are large, but they also benefit from being in large states with many more highly qualified students.

My next door neighbor in Johnstone A in the early 80’s was from Jersey. Her roommate was from Easley. She had a boyfriend back in Jersey that she called from the LANDLINE phone in the dorm room. One night she passed out when she was talking to him and ran up a huge phone bill that her parents weren’t happy about.

While I agree to some extent the profile for the students selected keeps going up YoY even with the increased enrollment.
So it’s not like the university is taking more kids with a greater spread. They are just taking more and more qualified candidates.
A ton of people who got into a lot of colleges around these parts like Clemson, UGA, and GT wouldn’t get in today.

I would have had to take the SAT more than once if I were trying to get accepted to Clemson now. Back in 1980, it was not too hard to get accepted. My son took the SAT 3 times and was not satisfied until he made a 1300+. Clemson has turned into an elite school with way too many students (in my opinion). Have you driven around Clemson lately? The town, and it's existing roads and infrastructure, was not designed to accommodate this many students.

football Saturday did during the 80's
When I was down last year for homecoming on a Thursday morning, I had to park close to Littlejohn and walk down town because the parking was so bad/sparse. I know change is inevitable but all of the high rise apartments takes away from the charm of the town. I'm happy that I was there in the late 80's and not now. I liked it when enrolment was around 15,000 including Grad students.

How about 6,000 enrollment in the late '60s? You could get in with 900 or so SAT but many never graduated on the other end because of drugs, drink, funding, the draft or whatever. Profs didn't mind at all flunking your ### either.
Just a different day now with admission almost a ticket to a degree. And I can assure you no athlete graduated in 3 years back then.
