Now, I disagree with it, but I understand it... hear me out.
The mantra being repeated ad naseum in support of FSU being left out is "the committee's job was to find best 4 teams." I think if that is what the CFP thinks it's job is, and if it's now accepted that that is what their job is, then the position of leaving FSU is defensible.
But that, in my opinion, is a dead wrong (not to mention stupidly impossible) motivation to have a playoff in the first place. In every sport I can think of, the champion may anecdotally be called the "best" team, but that is often arguable at best. If a 12 seed beats a 5 seed in the NCAA tournament, are they automatically the "better" team? Nope, of course not. But on that day they won, and *THAT* is what, again in my opinion, is what is at the core of sports. Teams win and lose games based on a ton of moments throughout the game/match and the performance of a bunch of players and coaches. Arguments can be made as to who is "best" in any given year, but the champion is inarguable. THAT is what the committee should be endeavoring to provide. Does anyone really think they'd call the 2008 Super Bowl winning Giants the "best" team that year? Of course not. But they darn sure are the champions.
So, back to the CFP... give us 4the 4 teams who give us the best chance of determining a champion. Remove at least come of the doubt. And leaving out an undefeated Power 5 champion in favor of not 1 but 2 teams that have losses, is distinctly NOT creating the best path to crowining a singular champion.
"BEST" will always be argued. After every game is played, after all the results, "BEST" will always be the subject of bar arguments and friendly banter. But "champion" never will. And in their decision this week, the committee decided they'd rather take part in the arguments then reinforce settling it on the field.

"Best" in this context has no definition that can be held up as an arbiter of fact. It's nebulous and only serves for conversation fodder.

past committees would have probably put FSU at #3 and uga at #4. That I could actually understand. uga wasn't blown out and dropped from #1 due to the loss. FSU undefeated champ that won the last 2 games with their #2 and #3 qb. So...... UT and Bama gets a rematch at #5 and #6.

With all due respect, I think I prefer the current outcome to this, because if there's one redeeming quality of the playoff picks, it's that UGA is out and they get no chance to three-peat. A three-peat would have been terrible for Clemson.

The same people on the playoff committee are some of the same people that has always said and believed that a good defense won games, then they will kick FSU out only bc they have an injured player on their offense without ever considering that their defense could keep them in a playoff game with a good chance of winning with their defense that just happens to be very good!!!

And the question is whether it’s “best” to that point or “best” chance of some hypothetical future. The committee chose the latter, but only for Bama/FSU and not the other 3. You could argue UGA and OSU have the best future chance of winning. In fact, OSU’s loss was to the number 1 team on the road, while Bama’s was to the number 3 team at home. It was simply arbitrary that OSU didn’t get another crack at MI on a neutral field while Oregon did and failed.
I surmise had UGA beat Bama, FSU would have been in and TX out which makes the charade even more egregious.
Further, the committee rewarded Bama for overcoming adversity and winning the Auburn game, but punished FSU for overcoming adversity and winning 2 games with a 2nd and 3rd string qb.

Had UGA won both Bama and UT would’ve been out.
Additionally think the same thing may have happened had Bamas 4th and 31 not been completed and yet they still beat UGA.
Even though by no real metric would the outcome of a single play (as either game could’ve/would’ve been swung by) make a real quantifiable difference to how “good” (or in CFP speak, how much “better” or “worse”) Bama was

They have said 4 best teams with a lean toward conference champions. They felt the other 4 Power 5 conferences were higher ranked than the ACC and then took each of their champions for the playoffs.
I guess that is what they are hanging their hats on regardless of fairness and a season of results.

They are really picking the top 4 teams, at that moment, who have the best chance to win the playoff. Alabama or Texas may fall flat on their face and FSU may have won. But neither are likely based on how they played in their final game.

But this is the fiorst year where a team without a valid argument to be left out, was left out.
I was wrong, but I honestly thought that there was a line that the "best" drumbeat couldn't (or at least wouldn't) cross. This was that line. An major conference champion who went undefeated against a pretty decent schedule was left out in favor of 2 teams who did not do so.
I had the same arguments and conversations as you have. I jus tthought they'd end prior to this point.
But, I was wrong, and I hate the outcome for the sport.
