Clemson by the numbers: Red zone defense stands out through 3 weeks

by - Staff Writer -

Clemson is one of a select few nationally to open the season with three Power 5 conference opponents -- and the number of top-tier statistical rankings after that start is impressive for the No. 1 Tigers.

The effort in the 41-6 win at Syracuse on Saturday was particularly impressive in red zone, where they held the Orange to no touchdowns in four trips to improve their ranking to No. 5 nationally in TD percentage allowed (22.2) and No. 10 in red zone defense overall (55.6).

Brent Venables' group is now back in the top-15 in the nation in scoring (7th; 10 PPG) and total defense (15th; 256.7 YPG).

The Tigers' offense jumped back into the top-15 nationally with the 600-plus-yard effort, up to 13th (544.3 YPG).

Individually, Trevor Lawrence passing for a career-best 395 yards vaulted him into the top-25 nationally in passing yards (20th; 831), passing yards per completion (22nd; 14.1), total offense (23rd; 295.3) and passing yards per game (277). His target for seven catches and 150 yards, Tee Higgins, moved up to the top-15 in receiving yards (318) and receiving yards per game 15 (106),
