Powell Named Special Teams Coordinator

by -

CLEMSON - Clemson Head Coach Tommy Bowden announced Saturday that assistant coach Andre Powell has been named special teams coordinator. Powell will also continue his duties as running backs coach. He is the first assistant coach to have that title under Bowden.

"Andre wanted the added responsibility," said Bowden. "We talked about this when he came to Clemson last year because he has had this responsibility in the past. Overall we were improved in special teams last year. I am always looking at what we can do to improve. He will coordinate the meetings and the portion of practice that deals with special teams.

Clemson ranked first in the ACC and 15th in the nation in kickoff return average last year with a 23.9 figure. C.J. Spiller ranked 14th in the nation on an individual basis with a 28.8 average. Clemson ranked fourth in the ACC in kickoff return coverage. Two other individuals had top 20 rankings last year as Mark Buchholz was 12th in the nation in field goals per game with a 1.69 figure and Jimmy Maners was 20th in punting with a 42.8 figure.
