Whitehurst Has Shoulder Surgery

Whitehurst Has Shoulder Surgery

by -

A little more than a week after saying surgery wouldn't be necessary, Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst went under the knife Thursday in hopes of easing the pain in his sore right shoulder.

News of the surgery was first announced by head coach Tommy Bowden Thursday night on the "SportsTalk" show on the South Carolina News Network. Clemson sports information director Tim Bourret confirmed the surgery Friday morning, and said Whitehurst should be "fine" for Clemson's upcoming bowl game.

The Greenville News reported in Friday morning's edition that Whitehurst's surgery was performed by Clemson team doctor Larry Bowman at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

The arthroscopic procedure came a little more than a week after Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., said he believed rest and rehab would ease the problem. But Whitehurst's father, David, told The News that after a week or so of rest the shoulder didn't appear to be getting any better. So the Whitehurst's decided on surgery.

Whitehurst should be able to resume throwing in about two weeks.

Koenning Talks to Texas A&M

The Charleston Post and Courier reported in Friday's edition that Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning spoke with Texas A&M head coach Dennis Franchione about the same opening with the Aggies.

But Koenning, who has a long coaching history with Franchione, apparently has decided to stay put.

Koenning signed a two-year contract with the Tigers prior to last season worth about $175,000 per year. The package at Texas A&M was reported to be worth around $300,000 annually.

The Aggies' job opened up when Franchione fired defensive coordinator Carl Torbush at the end of a 5-6 season in College Station.
