Recruiting: Merling Still Leaning to the Tigers

Phillip Merling

Tight end / defensive end

Cordova, TN (Cordova High School)

6'6", 255 lbs, 4.7

Clemson continues to lead for tight end /defensive end Phillip Merling (6-6, 255) from Cordova, TN. Merling, originally from South Carolina, is also considering South Carolina and Arkansas.

Phillip Merling has set a visit to Clemson for January for January 24th. He is also scheduled to visit Arkansas the following weekend, but he is not sure he will make that

trip because he might commit early to Clemson.

"I like their (Clemson's) weight room program," said Merling. "They get everyone big and strong there. They want me to play tight end, and I think their offensive scheme fits in well with me."

"Merling is a very talented athelete that can play two positions," said recruiting analyst Mickey Plyler. "He has a big body and runs well. He would have been ranked really high in the state of South Carolina had he not moved to Tennessee. Another thing that makes him attractive is living with a current college coach allowed him to learn more about the game."

Merling said he doesn't have a preference on which side of the ball he plays on the next level.

"I'm just ready to play," said Merling. " It doesn't matter to me where. I feel comfortable at both positions."

Clemson assistant Brad Scott is recruiting Merling for the Tigers.

Hear a live interview with Merling on the Sunday Night Recruiting Show with Mickey Plyler on 104.9 WCCP-FM in Upstate SC from 8 to 10 PM - Live interviews with many of prospects on the show.
