Clemson Broadcast Update |
CLEMSON - Collegiate Sports Partners, Ltd. CEO Kirk Wood apparently has
offered Clemson $400,000 in an attempt to settle the broadcast contract squabble between the sides, according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Wood met with Clemson officials Monday and made the offer during those discussions, the source said. Clemson allowed Monday's 5 p.m. deadline to pass without making a decision on the future of CSP's involvement with the school. The broadcast network, which was awarded all television and radio broadcast rights in a contract which began on July 1, 2000, missed a June 30 payment of $750,000. The grace period for the payment ended at 5 p.m. Monday. It is not known if the $400,000 is intended to buy out the contract, therefore ending CSP's relationship with Clemson, or if it is a stop-gap gesture which would buy the Alabama-based company more time to seek financial support. Meanwhile, officials at one radio network affiliate told the Daily Journal/Messenger Tuesday that a source inside Clemson's administration informed the station that a press release would be issued by Friday which would "clear up matters once and for all." CSP was awarded Clemson broadcast rights over several other suitors, including the incumbent Clemson Sports Network, when it offered the university $7.5 million over five years. The contract includes payments to head football coach Tommy Bowden ($435,000), head basketball coach Larry Shyatt ($125,000), football defensive coordinator Reggie Herring ($47,000) and former offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez ($50,000). Those payments have been made by CSP, according to Clemson officials. Messages left for Wood and CSP spokesman Herb Vincent were not returned.
