Leggett thinks the ball that the minor leagues play with might help with some of the low scores and bring some added excitement back into college baseball. His solution: leave the bats alone but switch to the livelier baseball used in the minor leagues. The A.B.C.A. executive director, David Keilitz, says he plans to research options and poll coaches about it this summer. C.W.S. attendance was running about 30,000 ahead of last year entering the weekend, but Leggett says he fears a drop-off without more home runs and dramatic comebacks. “We’re bunting in the first inning on the second play of the game,” Leggett said. “That sounds good to a guy who says, ‘That’s the way we did it in the 1940s and ’50s when I played.’ But people weren’t going to the College World Series back then. That’s not all they’re looking for. They’re looking for something exciting.”

Leggett, who will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in January, says the N.C.A.A. legislated some excitement out of the game by deadening aluminum bats.
