Clemson head coach Monte Lee got some good news Friday when top prospect Kier Meredith announced he would not sign with the Chicago Cubs and would instead enroll at Clemson.

Meredith, rated as the 215th-best draft prospect by Baseball America, was picked Wednesday in the 28th round with the 855th overall pick by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday afternoon.M Meredith toyed with the idea of signing with Chicago, but in the end wanted to be a Tiger.

This past season, Meredith led his high school team in nearly every offensive category with a .444 batting average, 14 extra base hits, 19 stolen bases and just six total strikeouts in 25 games.

Recently listed by Baseball America as the nation’s best defensive outfielder among draft-eligible high school prospects, Meredith has been clocked running from home plate to first base in 3.96 seconds by Major League scouts this season, and Lee said Friday that he expects Meredith to contribute right away.

"We would anticipate Kier being able to compete for the starting centerfield role as a true freshman," Lee said. "He has game-changing speed. He's one of the top five fastest players in the 2017 class. He runs like a 6.34 sixty. Water covers two-thirds of the Earth and Kier covers the rest. He can fly. He's a left-handed hitter, which we love. He brings a skill set that we don't necessarily have. He plays to his tools. He is gonna bunt, push and drag, and hit the ball all over the park. We feel like we can develop him more as a hitter. He is going to be a dynamic player. He is exactly the type of player we need to bring in to the program. He can do a lot of things that guys can't do because of his athleticism."
