Swinney on Gamecocks hiring Will Muschamp

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked on Sunday about his thoughts on Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp becoming the 33rd all-time head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

"I think Will is a great coach," Swinney said. "I have known Will a long time, going back to when he was a GA at Auburn, and I was coaching at Alabama. I think he will do an excellent job. I think he will put a great staff together, and I think that's a great hire for South Carolina. Obviously, things didn't go the way he wanted them to at Florida. A lot of different reason for that, but he is a guy that I know is going to be thankful to have another opportunity. I guarantee that he will do a great job for South Carolina. No doubt."

Muschamp was a top candidate for the vacant South Carolina job even though he compiled a mediocre overall record of 28-21 as a former head coach of the Florida Gators. He was fired after the Gators lost to South Carolina 23-20 in overtime back in 2014.

The 44-year old was Auburn's defensive coordinator this past year, and his defense held opponents to 21 or fewer points in five games, but Auburn went a very dismal 6-6 record.

There are reports that Muschamp has had an interest in former South Carolina running Marcus Lattimore as an assistant coach.

The Gamecocks finished with a 3-9 season in 2015, and their coaching search finally ended after 54 days.
