Two Tigers make top QBs list |
Two Clemson quarterbacks made Sporting News’
top-25 ranking at the position for the 2018 season.
Returning starter Kelly Bryant checks in at No. 13 and five-star freshman Trevor Lawrence rounds out the list at No. 25. “We can't help it — Lawrence hasn't played in a game yet but he completed 11 of 16 passes for 122 yards in the Tigers' spring game. That included a beautiful, 50-yard touchdown pass that perfectly captured the insane hype surrounding him,” Bill Bender writes. “Dabo Swinney will control the hype for as long as possible, but this five-star freshman will get a chance to get contribute in 2018, and he's going to push incumbent Kelly Bryant for the starting job.” In his first year as a starter, Bryant led the ACC in completion percentage (65.8) and adjusted completion percentage (73.9) but saw his QB rating go down each month last season, finishing sixth among ACC peers (131.73) and 60th nationally. He ranked eighth among conference QBs in yards per attempt (7.0) with 13 touchdowns to eight interceptions. Bryant led the Tigers in rushing yards gained (884) on 192 carries with 11 touchdowns. Lawrence left Cartersville (Ga.) rated as high as the nation's top prospect and broke Deshaun Watson's state records in passing yards and touchdowns. Clemson isn’t the only team with two QBs on the list, as Alabama has Nos. 2 (sophomore Tua Tagovailoa) and 11 (junior Jalen Hurts). Among other notable QBs, South Carolina’s Jake Bentley is No. 17, NC State’s Ryan Finley is No. 21 and Miami’s Malik Rosier is No. 23. Among ACC peers only, Athlon ranked Bryant as the third-best QB in the conference on Thursday behind Virginia Tech's Josh Jackson and NC State's Ryan Finley.
