Petrino updates star Cardinals CB injury status

by - Staff Writer -

Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino says his top cornerback is getting better, but isn't offering a timetable on playing Saturday night versus Clemson.

Jaire Alexander was helped off the field in the opener versus Purdue after sustaining a right knee injury. His father texted the Louisville Courier-Journal that the injury wasn't "major" shortly after the game and told the same outlet Tuesday that Alexander "doesn't really have any pain" but "They don't want him to play unless he's 100 percent."

Petrino's assessment was little more vague Wednesday.

"He's still day-to-day," Petrino said on the ACC teleconference Wednesday morning. "He continues to get better so we're excited about that."

Alexander was named preseason All-America after an All-ACC campaign in 2016. In the Clemson game last year, Alexander picked off two passes and forced a fumble.

He is also a talented returner, averaging 10.5 per attempt with a touchdown last season.

Alexander's father, Landis, told the Courier-Journal it will likely be an all-or-nothing deal when it comes to playing time this week.

“I can’t see risking any further injury if he’s not (on defense and special teams),” Landis said. “… I like to see him play as much as the next person, but I don’t want to mortgage his future for one game.”
