View Full Profile last season. If you remember, Townsend didn't play in the first four games, and it was thought that he would redshirt. However, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele told us they were going to lift the redshirt and let Townsend play in game number five. He contributed on special teams and at linebacker the rest of the season.

However,Bourret told us on Wednesday that Townsend was actually suspended by the NCAA for four games last season. Once the team went through the appeals process, the season had already started, so it was decided that the first four games would be his suspension. He could have redshirted last year, but the suspension would have carried over into this season.

The suspension was due to an incident that happened while he was in high school, and it involved an assistant coach and a cell phone.
