Clemson named No. 10 national seed, regional field unveiled |
Clemson (45-14), which earned a share of the ACC’s top regular-season record (22-8), missed out on a top-8 national seed in Monday's NCAA Tournament announcement and would have to travel to No. 7 Florida State if both teams advance to the Super Regionals.
The Tigers, seeded 10th in the NCAA Tournament, finished the season with wins in 19 of its final 22 games and 10-straight victories in true road games. Clemson will host 2-seed Vanderbilt (31-25; RPI 38), 3-seed St. John's (39-15; RPI 27) and 4-seed Morehead State (37-24; RPI 96). The Tigers open with Morehead State at 6 p.m. on Friday in the double-elimination tournament. Clemson has hosted three straight NCAA Regionals under third-year coach Monte Lee. The Tigers are seeking their first Super Regional and College World Series appearance since 2010. The top-8 national seeds were (in order) Florida, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Stanford, Arkansas, North Carolina and Georgia. The next eight were Texas Tech, Clemson, Stetson, East Carolina, Texas, Minnesota, Coastal Carolina and NC State. Morehead State toppled Ohio Valley Conference favorite and nationally-ranked Tennessee Tech two games in a row for an NCAA berth. St. John's, which is making a second-straight NCAAs trip to Clemson (went 0-2 last year), won a winner-take-all versus Seton Hall to clinch an NCAA bid as the 1-seed in the Big East. Vanderbilt finished fourth in the SEC East under former Clemson assistant Tim Corbin, going 6-2 down the stretch. Vanderbilt won the Clemson Regional in 2017 by taking 2-of-3 matchups with the Tigers. Florida State (43-17) won the ACC title last week with a 4-0 run in Durham that included a 5-4 win over Clemson in the semifinals. The two teams have split the season series so far, 2-2, after Clemson won a weekend series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in May.
