The Suspension

by - Radio Host -

Like every other aspect in sports, suspensions are something we analyze and we have a major suspension to analyze for Saturday.

When Heisman trophy quarterback Jameis Winston was suspended for the first half of Saturday's game questions about the Clemson game began to circulate throughout my head.

Who is Sean Maguire?

Maguire is the backup who now inherits the starting job Saturday night.  He is a 6’3”, 220-pound sophomore from Sparta, New Jersey.  He has played in five games in his career with his most extensive action coming in the Idaho game last season.  This year he did not play in the opener but did go 3-5 for 28 yards passing against The Citadel.  For his career, Maguire is 16 of 26 for 144 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

What will FSU's game plan be in the first half?

My guess is Florida State will try to shorten the game in the first half.  I would look for the Seminoles to run the ball more to control the clock.  I doubt they will allow Maguire to do a lot in the passing game and will try to give him the best chance to succeed with some easier throws.

How will FSU respond in the second half?

The Seminoles will get the Heisman winner back to start the second half.  I would think the energy level will be different as the number one team gets a five star recruit back for the final 30 minutes.  I would think the Noles play with a sense of urgency to start the second stanza.

How big is the coin toss?

This now becomes a bigger factor.  Both teams will want to defer if they win the toss.  Florida State obviously wants to get Winston back on the field ASAP.  Clemson would like to start the second half with the ball so it can limit the amount of touches FSU gets with Winston on the field.

How will the pressure of the first half lead to changes for both teams?

Clemson now faces a situation where the Tigers could feel pressure to race out to a lead.  Clemson may be the rabbit in the contest.  FSU will feel pressure to keep the close until Winston can come back in and save the day.  The pressure of the first half should be on both teams.

How much time will FSU give Maguire in practice the rest of the week?

This is an important aspect of the planning.  I am sure Maguire gets very few reps with the first team each week, so he will need to get him as many reps as possible with the wide outs and skill players.

How will Winston's teammates respond?

This can go two ways.  Part of me says Winston's teammates have to be tired of his antics.  He causes a lot of distractions and I would not be surprised to see them extremely disappointed in their quarterback.  However, most of me thinks this will be a rallying point and the staff will create an "Us vs. the world mentality."

How will the Seminole crowd respond?

I am very interested to see how the fans react to Winston.  Many Seminole supporters have to be disappointed in the face of their program.  But my guess is there will be a buzz in the air when he comes in the game and he will be greeted warmly by the home fans.

How will Winston play when he comes into the game?

It seems like nothing gets to Winston.  He has been the center of controversy in the past but he always plays like nothing is bothering him.  My guess is he plays very well again Saturday when his time comes.

What will the aftermath of the game feel like?

Clemson is in a no win situation.  If the Tigers win it will be downplayed because of the suspension.  If the Tigers lose then the critics will say they couldn't even win with FSU suspending its best player for a half.
