Mickey,

The first Playoff rankings come out this week and there are some big games this weekend leading up to the rankings. One of the fun things about the playoffs are the what ifs and in this crazy upside world we live in could it be possible that Central Florida gets the final playoff spot?

Here is the fun part. Let's say that Alabama wins the SEC and finishes undefeated which would mean no other SEC team would have less than 2 losses. No playoff team other than Bama. The wacky Big 12 is subject to no team having less than 2 losses because strange things happen out there. No playoff team from the Big 12. Who knows about the Big 10 and the Pac 12 but how about neither conference having a team with only 1 loss. No playoff for those conferences either.

The fun part is saying that both Clemson and Notre Dame are undefeated and join Alabama as 3 of the playoff teams which brings us to Central Florida . Could the committee almost be forced to take UCF by default?

Crazy year so far that will probably get even more crazy before the Thanksgiving turkey is on the table. What if games are fun and they change each week.

Andy

Andy,

I think Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame are in great shape. UCF is the only other undefeated team, and I think they have a great chance to get in.

There are only eight one-loss Power five teams left. Here are their remaining opponents:

Oklahoma-@Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas, @ WVU, Big 12 Title game*

WVU-@Texas, TCU, @Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Big 12 Title game*

Michigan-Penn State, @Rutgers, Indiana, @Ohio State, Big Ten Title game*

Ohio State-Nebraska, @Mchigan State, @ Maryland, Michigan, Big Ten Title game*

Washington State-Cal, @Colorado, Arizona, Washington, Pac 12 Title game*

Georgia-@Kentucky, Auburn, UMASS, Georgia Tech, SEC Title game*

Kentucky-Georgia, @Tennessee, MTSU, @Louisville, SEC Title game*

LSU-Alabama, @Arkansas, Rice, @A&M, SEC Title game*

*potential title game

So Oklahoma and West Virginia play once and potentially twice. If they split, I can see the Big 12 having a two-loss champion. Washington State still has a potential loss out there. Ohio State and Michigan play each other, and I can see the Big 10 having a two-loss champ. Alabama could beat LSU and then beat the winner of Georgia-Kentucky to give the runner-up in the league two losses.

If there are only three Power 5 teams with one or fewer losses, does the committee go with undefeated UCF or a two-loss Big 12, PAC 12 or Big 10? This will get very interesting.

Hey Mickey- with the ACC TV Chanel emerging in 2019 and Notre Dame’s rise in the polls this year- has there been and renewed talks of them joining as a full-time conference member when their NBC contract expires?

Dave

Dave,

I know Notre Dame wants to stay independent. They want to play one game a year in California (@Southern Cal, @ Stanford or neutral site game with Navy). They want to play a game each year in Texas. They want their cake and eat it too. The only thing I see changing is if they lose out on a playoff spot or if the committee urges them to make a move. Notre Dame will not make a move unless their hand is forced.

Would you provide where Spiers averages rank in the conference and nationally?

Regards,

Bob

Bob,

Spiers averages 39.52 yards per punt with is 79th in the country, and ninth in the ACC.
