Notebook: Five Tigers Make Cut at Booz Allen |
Clemson, SC-Five former Clemson golfers made the 36-hole cut at the Booz Allen Classic at TPC at Avenel in Potomac, MD. The list of Tigers who will be playing on the weekend includes Brent Delahoussaye, who is playing in his first career PGA Tour event.
Also making the cut were former Clemson All-Americans Jonathan Byrd, John Engler, Danny Ellis, and Charles Warren. It marks the first time that four different former Clemson golfers made the cut in the same PGA Tour event. Former Clemson All-American D.J. Trahan also took part in the event, but failed to make the 36-hole cut. It marked the first time Clemson had had six former players in the same PGA Tour event. The five players who made the cut combined to shoot 21 under-par on Friday. Delahoussaye had a strong round on Friday with a three-under par 68. He stands at two-under par after 36 holes. He had four birdies and a bogey on Friday and has a 93 percent accuracy mark in fairway hitting percentage for the tournament, fifth best in the field. Delahoussaye is the first former Clemson golfer to make the cut in his first PGA Tour event since Lucas Glover accomplished the feat at the 2001 Texas Open. Delahoussaye has played in tournaments on the NGA Tour, the Tar Heel Tour and the Nationwide Tour this year. The native of Greenville is 12th on the money list on the NGA Tour and is 10th on the Tar Heel Tour. He won $24,000 when he captured medallist honors at the Tour event at Royal Lakes in April. The following week he finished second at the Old Sycamore Open on the Tar Heel Tour. There were many other significant story lines for former Clemson golfers on Friday. Engler, a three-time All-American under Larry Penley from 1997-01, had a career best round of six-under-par 65 on Friday to move from 84th place into the top 25. Engler stands at five-under par 137 for the tournament. His round included six birdies, two bogeys and an eagle. It was his best round on the PGA Tour by four shots. The native of Augusta, GA who overcame a severe foot injury after suffering an automobile accident in 2004, had missed the cut in each of his last eight events. Jonathan Byrd is actually the top Tiger in the tournament after 36 holes with a six-under par score of 136. Byrd shot a five-under par 66 on Friday with five birdies and 13 pars. It is Byrd's first round on the PGA Tour since April 13 when he had to withdraw from the Heritage in Hilton Head, SC after suffering a rib injury while shooting a 67. Charles Warren also had a 68 on Friday and stands at three-under-par 139 after two rounds. The native of Columbia has 10 birdies in the first two rounds. Duncan Named Third Team All-American by Golfweek Poole and Hatfield Honorable Mention Selections Clemson, SC-Recent Clemson graduate Brian Duncan has been named a third-team All-American by Golfweek. Fellow graduate Stephen Poole and freshman Vince Hatfield were named honorable mention All-Americans by the publication. Duncan, who is now a professional, had a 73.15 stroke average this past year when he helped the Tigers to a seventh place final ranking at the NCAA Championships in Sunriver, OR. Duncan was Clemson's most consistent golfer with eight top 20 finishes, including a third place individually at the ACC Tournament in April. Duncan, a native of Greenville, SC, ranked 32nd in the nation in the final Sagarin rankings. The three year starter tied for top honors among Clemson golfers at the NCAA Tournament. Poole was Clemson's top golfer in terms of stroke average this year with a 73.08 average. He also led the team in rounds under par with 13 and was the only Tiger to win a tournament as he captured the US Collegiate in April. Hatfield had a 73.55 stroke average for the year, tied for fifth best in Clemson history (Chris Patton, 1986-87). The freshman from Greenwood was Clemson's top golfer at the NCAA Central Regional in Cleveland with a 216 score, good enough for 12th place. Hatfield was earlier named to the Golf Coaches Association All-Region team. Jordan and Jim Byrd Win South Carolina Golf Association Father-Son Championship Columbia, SC-Clemson assistant golf coach Jordan Byrd teamed with his father, Jim Byrd to win the 39th annual South Carolina Father-Son Championship at The Windermere Club in Blythewood, SC on Thursday. The duo combined to shoot a five-under par 67 in the modified alternate shot format. They had five birdies and no bogeys in defeating three teams by four shots. The Byrd team had nine-hole scores of 34-33. Jordan Byrd just completed his first year as the assistant coach on Larry Penley's staff. The former Southern Conference Champion as a junior (1997) at Furman, helped the Tigers to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA National Tournament in Oregon earlier this month. Jim Byrd is a graduate of the University of North Carolina where he was a starter on the football team in the 1960s. The Byrd family has had strong ties to Clemson over the last 10 years, beginning with the enrollment of their youngest son Jonathan, who was an All-American at Clemson from 1997-00, and is now in his fifth year on the PGA Tour.
