Clemson Soccer Defeats #1 Maryland

CLEMSON, SC-- ­Danny Poe scored with 16:02 left in the match in leading fourth-ranked Clemson to a 2-1 win over number-one ranked Maryland at Clemson’s Historic Riggs Field Friday night.

With the win, Clemson improves to 5-0 on the year, while
Maryland falls to 4-1 this season. This was the first ACC match of the
year for both teams.

Maryland is ranked number one by the NSCAA , College Soccer News and The Terrapins are ranked fourth by Soccer America.

Clemson is ranked fourth by the NSCAA and fifth by Soccer
America. The Tigers are also ranked fifth by and sixth by
College Soccer News.

A total of 6,821 fans attended the game for the second largest crowd in school history.

The Tigers scored first at the 11:51 mark as Frederico Moojen
scored his fifth goal of the season. Dane Richards passed the ball to
David Bell who crossed the ball to Moojen who scored from 10 yards out.

Maryland tied the game in the 41st minute as Jeremy Hall scored his second goal of the season with an assist by David Glaudemans.

Poe scored the game winner at the 73:58 mark. Richards
crossed the ball to Poe who knocked in the game winner for his second goal of the year and fourth for his career.

Clemson was forced to play with only 10 men when Alan O’Hara received a red cared with 28:57 left to go in the match.

“Dane gave me a great ball, he put the ball right at my head,”
said Poe. “I couldn’t have asked for a better ball.”

Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair now has 44 wins over top 25 teams since he arrived at Clemson in 1995.

Overall, Clemson has seven wins over number-one ranked teams
in school history. This was Adair’s second.

“You couldn’t have scripted it any better,” said Clemson Head
Coach Trevor Adair. “We showed character and fought hard. We competed
and competed hard. We kept plugging away and Dane sent Danny a great ball
for the winning goal. It was a great crowd and a lot of enthusiasm here
tonight. You couldn’t have written a better script. When we were down
a man, we did not quit. This was a total team victory and we are off to a
great start. We did not lose our composure and that is a sign of a good
