Tommy Bowden Tuesday Press Conference

by - Correspondent -

Quick notes and quotes from Tommy Bowden's Tuesday press conference:

- App. State: Mentioned it once and probably won't mention it any more. It happened a couple of weeks ago and I think it got everyone's attention. I'm going to talk more about us improving and getting better.

- They have guys that run 4.4 and 4.3, too. They may not have as many. But they've got fast players, too.

- Most of the guys on Furman's roster are on the verge of being 1-A players. Years that say we had 19 scholarships, if we had 20 or 21 we might have offered one of those guys.

- Harper and Korn on field together: Don't think we're ready for that yet...but it's something that could possibly happen as we go on into the year. It's something we won't rule out this early.]

- First time have had two quarterbacks this close in talent. First time there's been a guy whose had the talent to merit that scenario (possibly playing down the road).

- Defense vs. ULM was missed tackles and missed assignment. More concerned about missed tackles, and the fundamentals and technique involved with that. I think today we'll work pretty hard on that in full pads.

- We've played 11 true freshmen, which is the most since 1985.

- Billy Napier: He can coach and recruit. If he stays hungry he's got a good future in this profession.

- Always talk about playing better than the week before, as opposed to being focused on a lesser opponent.

- I definitely would not call this a tune-up game. I think that's the worst think I could do for my players. We've got a whole lot of improvement to do, and that's how we'll approach practice today and the rest of the week.

- Parity: Players and coaches understand it. I think fans are a little slow to come around. But the face of college football has changed.

- Offensive line: There was a lack of intensity Saturday. Last year's unit had a nasty aspect where they finished blocks. This group doesn't do that. And as we get to the meat of the schedule we've got to get that back.

- Furman fullback Jerome Felton: If we tackle like we did Saturday he'll present a lot of problems.
