Tommy Bowden Quotes on Football Scrimmage

Bowden after practice:

One week into it, any surprises?

Keith Kelly stood out like we were hoping he would and he did…J.J. McKelvey stood out. You know, it’s hard to tell on the line. But Eric Meekins had an interception and a blocked field goal. I think it’s the first blocked field goal or extra point in a year. And Eric Meekins had 10 tackles. Eric Meekins stood out on defense.

I know a couple of times we had to blow the whistle on guys and you can’t see the effect of a sack. It looked like Leake, Eric Meekins and Rodney Thomas. I couldn’t tell anything up front defensively or offensively until we look at the film. Cedric Thomas and Cedric Johnson at least went the whole day.. with Todd going out yesterday it was important that he go and with Cedric Johnson it was important that he go. And Charlie Whitehurst was 14-15 for 200 and something yards. Looks like he’s going to have the ability to push for some good competition.

On Altroy Bodrick:

If we were playing he could go. We’re just holding him out of contact.

On Todd McClinton:

Todd we were real pleased with Todd. Yesterday he went out and was in the hospital. Going today he’s got a fractured thumb. Mark Jetton going to guard is helping us out getting some work.

On the corners inability to stop the wide receivers most of the day:

Most of the deep balls were J.J. McKelvey on Ryan Hemby. 6-4 on 5-9. One of them over here I don’t know. (it was Kevin Johnson and Jackie Robinson) That shouldn’t happen. The other was on Ryan. He’s short and is going to have to learn how to play tall. Got to learn how to play tall. Bobby Williamson did good. Ben hall made a couple of good catches. Bernard Rambert ran good and we go him out. Chad Jasmin did a good job. I feel real good about the backs right now.

We’re trying to stress turnovers and we put it on the ground. Willie had the unpardonable sin, which you can’t let happen – throw it high over the middle on the goal line. Can’t do it. Kyle coughed one up and Tony Elliot coughed one up. We recovered those. One lost turnover. That’s pretty good. I don’t like the fact that we put it on the ground.

Overall impression of the defense:

Very first scrimmage of the 2002 team, so you’re not going to have a polished product or anything close. The longer they stayed on the field they wore out, but we don’t work on any conditioning. Just upper body work. What you would like to see is some unity. It’s had to expect a whole bunch in the first scrimmage.

On the large number of offside penalties:

Better correct those. Todd had two or three and I was about to stop it and say hold on a second. Here’s a guy that’s been going on audible snap count for two years and you put him over there and get him. Poor brad did that to him. I was real pleased

Future scrimmages:

Have three full scrimmages left. Have a game and two more, but have some half scrimmages. Whatever the NCAA allows.
