Todd McClinton Gives Trainers a Scare

CLEMSON - Clemson's football team received a scare Friday when defensive

lineman Todd McClinton hyperventilated and briefly passed out during spring

practice drills.

McClinton briefly lost consciousness and was attended to on the field by the

trainer Danny Poole and his staff. Once he regained consciousness, he was

taken for precautionary tests with team physician Dr. Byron Harder.

All of the tests came back negative, Sports Information Director Tim Bourret

said Friday evening, and McClinton could be on the field for Saturday's

scrimmage. A decision on his participation will be made Saturday morning.

McClinton's scare proved to be the most noteworthy event of Friday's

workouts. Head coach Tommy Bowden and the team appear to be highly

anticipating Saturday's scrimmage at the Jervey Practice Complex.

"You'd like to see one of the backs break one, or the receivers make a play,"

Bowden said when asked what he hoped to see in the scrimmage. "Now you'd like

to see (quarterback) Willie (Simmons) move a bit...

"Now, we'll be a little restricted because there's some certain new wrinkles

we want to look at. That messes up your continuity when you get drives going.

You've got to do some of that."

The scrimmage will begin at 12:30 p.m. and is expected to run until

approximately 3 p.m.
