Recruiting: Merling Close to a Clemson Commitment |
Phillip Merling Tight end / defensive end Cordova, Tn (Cordova High School) 6'5", 255 lbs, 4.7 With a strong finish and the contract extension of Coach Tommy Bowden, Clemson has sold a lot of players on the promising future of the program. One of those players, tight end / defensive end Phillip Merling of Tennessee's Cordova High School, is so impressed with the program that he may choose Clemson without having made an official visit. "I have really been thinking about Clemson a lot lately, and it is the only school I think about," Merling said. "The coaches have been out to visit me, and they have always treated me like family. Plus, I really like the things they have told me about the weight training program." If Merling does sign with the Tigers, he will more than likely play tight end. Although there is no interest in any other schools right now, Merling hasn't set a date in which he plans to make an announcement. Merling was scheduled to visit South Carolina this weekend but has canceled that trip and one to Arkansas January 31st. Merling, who is originally from Calhoun County (SC), is being recruited by Coach Brad Scott. Merling lives with Memphis outside linebackers coach Chris Rumph, who is Merling's uncle, legal guardian and former high school coach.
