Jeffrie Gibson said he committed because the Tigers are on the verge of doing big things in the ACC.

A week after deciding North Carolina State wasn’t the place for him, Jeffrie Gibson decided that playing for the Clemson Tigers was an opportunity that he couldn't pass up.

before Saturday night’s 38-35 win over Georgia, becoming Clemson’s 16th pledge for the 2014 recruiting cycle.

Gibson told TigerNet that he knew the time to commit to Clemson was now because the Tigers are on the verge of doing big things in the ACC.

“I felt it was the best choice for me and that it would be the best choice for me to better myself and reach my goals in life,” Gibson told TigerNet Sunday afternoon. “Clemson is perfect academically. The football program is second to none and they’re doing things that no other ACC school has ever done. And, my family and I love the family environment.”

The 6-3, 191-pound safety prospect chose Clemson over East Carolina, North Carolina, N.C. State and Tulane.

Gibson said that caught Swinney off guard with his commitment.

“I committed to Coach Swinney before the game and he was shocked because he didn’t expect it at all, but everyone was excited,” Gibson said. “He jumped up and hugged me and welcomed me to the family.”

Gibson and his family have traveled to Clemson many times, but he said last night was by far the best atmosphere.

“I loved it,” he said. “It was great and it was as loud as ever. The fans were into it and I was happy to be a part of it all.”

As a junior, Gibson amassed 69 tackles and four interception, returned two for touchdowns, He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown and caught five passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.
