Duke Game Postponed |
Clemson, SC-The Clemson vs. Duke football game scheduled for this
Saturday, September 15th, has been postponed. All Atlantic Coast Conference athletic events through Saturday were postponed, ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced on Wednesday. The action is the result of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on Tuesday. The makeup date for the Clemson vs. Duke game will be determined later this week. All events surrounding this weekend, including Clemson Hall of Fame induction and the ground breaking ceremonies at Littlejohn Coliseum, are also postponed. "We have made this action as a conference," said Robinson. " Our prayers go out to the families who suffered significant loss as a result of the terrorist actions earlier this week. I will discuss a new date for the game with (Duke Athletic Director) Joe Alleva this week and we plan to have an announcement on the new date as soon as possible." Clemson Head Coach Tommy Bowden was informed of the decision in the middle of practice Wednesday. "I support the decision made by the ACC,' said Bowden. "I told the team during a break in practice and we changed gears right away. We went right into preparation for the Virginia game." "We support the decision made by the ACC," said Clemson linebacker Chad Carson. "We could have played, and would have had the league made the decision to do so. But it is also a time to reflect on what took place. We certainly feel for the families who have suffered a great loss." This is just the second time in history that Clemson has been involved in a game that has been postponed. Clemson's November 23, 1963 football game with South Carolina was postponed due to the death of former President John F. Kennedy. That game was rescheduled for the following Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. Clemson's women's soccer match with Florida State, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed until Monday. The time for that match will be determined on Thursday. Call-in Show Postponed Clemson also announced that Head Coach Tommy Bowden's Thursday evening Call-in Show has been postponed. Bowden was to do the show with the voice of the Tigers, Jim Phillips from the BILO store in Easley. It was be rescheduled at the end of the season. Clemson Athletic Events Postponed this weekend

"It is the opinion of our conference members that this will allow for an
appropriate period of reflection and respect for those many people who
have been impacted by the tragic events that took place yesterday. A
good case can be made for playing or not playing the games this
Saturday," said Swofford. "Our schools thoroughly discussed the
situation on their own campuses and with each other and voted
unanimously to postpone all athletic events through Saturday. We are
praying for the safety, health and recovery of all of our fellow
Americans."
Three of the five games scheduled for Saturday have been rescheduled --
West Virginia at Maryland has been rescheduled for September 29,
Northern Illinois at Wake Forest will be played on November 24, SMU at
North Carolina will be played December 1. The Duke at Clemson and
Georgia Tech at Florida State games will be rescheduled at a later date.
