CLEMSON RECRUITING

Clemson receives commitment from state's top defensive back

Orangeburg-Wilkinson defensive back Ryan Hemby (5-10, 180) committed to Clemson on Sunday night during a visit by Tiger assistant Rick Stockstill.

"They're just down to earth people," he said. "Coach Stockstill is an honest person and I felt good around him and the rest of the coaching staff."

Hemby will still visit Maryland this weekend. Terp assistant coach Wally Ake, a former Clemson assistant, has been recruiting Hemby.

"I just really want to show appreciation to them," said Hemby. "I promised the coach up there that I would visit. I just want to thank them for showing interest in me."

Hemby will go on his official visit to Clemson the weekend of Jan. 14. It's the same weekend that most of Clemson's targets are visiting. Hemby said he wouldn't try to influence the others that weekend.

"I'll let those guys make decisions on their own," he said. "It's a special time, although it's pretty stressful."

Hemby said he grew up a Michigan fan, but didn't want to go to school that far away from home. He went to Clemson's junior day and also attended a couple of Clemson games during his junior year of high school.

"I think I'll come in as a cover corner," he said. "They're losing a couple of guys this year and if I work hard I can come in and make an impact."

As a sophomore, he had 6 interceptions and 7 more as a junior. Hemby is rated the number 3 prospect in SC according to recruiting analyst Mickey Plyler.

Clemson also received a commitment from offensive lineman Sean Young on Sunday. The Tigers had previously received commitments from junior college players Derrick Brantley and Chad Elliott. Clemson has also received a commitment from Mo Fountain, who will enroll in Clemson in January 2001.

Note: a full profile of Hemby will appear in the next issue of Tiger Insider, due out in mid-January.
