CELEBRATION The 20th anniversary of Clemson's 1981 National Championship team was celebrated during pregame ceremonies Saturday. After a private reception Friday night, the team signed autographs outside Fike Hall for 90 minutes Saturday. The on-field celebration culminated with the team running down the hill just before kickoff to a standing ovation. The traditional dotting of the "I" in "Tigers," spelled out by the Clemson band, was done by Mrs. A.C. Brown and Mrs. Coral Harper in memory of former player Gary Brown and former assistant coach Tom Harper, both of whom passed away in the years since the championship. KINARD HONORED Saturday's pregame ceremonies also included Terry Kinard's on-campus ceremony for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, and his official induction into Clemson's Ring of Honor. Kinard played at Clemson from 1978-82, and remains the school's only unanimous selection to the All-America Team. Kinard went on to play for the New York Giants in the NFL, where he became a Pro-Bowler and won a Super Bowl championship. HEISMAN WATCH Though he played reasonably well Saturday, it's safe to say any slim chance Woody Dantzler had at staying in the Heisman Trophy hunt went by the boards with Saturday's defeat. Dantzler threw for 277 yards on 22-of-41 passing (one interception), and had 22 carries for 59 yards, including touchdown runs of two and 7. HAMILTON'S RECORD After setting the Clemson record for single-season receptions by a freshman a week ago, Derrick Hamilton took possession of the yardage record Saturday. Hamilton finished with 7 receptions for 88 yards, giving him 518 yards on the season. The total surpasses the old mark of 480 set by Terry Smith in 1990. RUNNING RAMBERT Junior tailback Bernard Rambert had his best game of the season, rushing for 67 yards on 11 carries, including a one-yard touchdown run. Clemson rushed for 186 yards on the day. SECONDARY WOES
The Clemson secondary continued to struggle in a big way Saturday. Two Seminole receivers finished the day with better than 100 yards in receptions, Jovan Walker (6-162, two touchdowns) and Talman Gardner (6-115 and two touchdowns). Quarterback Chris Rix finished with 369 passing yards (19-of-30), but was intercepted twice by Brian Mance. ODDS AND ENDS Brian Mance had 100 total yards on five kickoff returns. He also returned one punt for 11 yards...Sophomore kicker Aaron Hunt connected on 2-3 field goal attempts, hitting from 22 and 32, while missing from 35...Florida State's Atrews Bell had four receptions for 44 yards Saturday, extending his streak of consecutive games with at least one catch to 21...Greg Jones continued the suddenly resurgent Florida State rushing attack with 160 yards on 17 carries (9.4 yards per carry). His long was a touchdown run of 51 yards...Clemson is now 2-3 at Death Valley in 2001. *Clemson gained 463 yards of total offense in today's game, the most the Tigers have ever gained against the Seminoles. The previous best was 428 yards by the Tigers against the Seminoles in Death Valley since 1995. Clemson had 321 rushing and 107 passing that day. Clemson had 277 passing and 186 rushing today. The 277 yards passing were the second highest figure for the Tigers against the Seminoles. Clemson had 285 passing in the 1997 contest. *Woodrow Dantzler had 336 yards of total offense in today's game, most ever by a Clemson player against the Seminoles. Dantzler had 277 passing, most ever by a Clemson player against Florida State and 59 rushing. *Dantzler went over the 5000 passing mark in today's game. His 277 yards passing today gives him 5219 for his career. He is now second on the Clemson career list, trailing only Nealon Greene, who had 5719 between 1994-97. *Dantzler now has 1760 yards passing and 737 rushing this season. He is on pace for 2420 passing and 1013 rushing for the season. No quarterback in NCAA history has had 2000 yards passing and 1000 yards rushing in the same season. *Today marked the fifth time in the last six games that Dantzler has had at least 300 yards of total offense. Dantzler now has 11 of the 24 300-yard total offense games in Clemson history. Most of his top total offense games have come on the road. In fact, his 336 yards today were a career high for the graduate student for a game at Death Valley. His 277 yards passing were also a career high in Death Valley for Dantzler. *Travis Zachery had five receptions today and now has 35 for the season, 95 for his career. He needs five more catches to become the first Tiger in history to have 100 career receptions. *Clemson injuries: Ben Hall suffered a separated shoulder. Jackie Robinson suffered a pulled groin. Derrick Hamilton suffered a sprained ankle late in the game. *Clemson ran 86 plays today, its high total for the year and most since the Tigers ran 95 against NC State last year. *Florida State averaged 9.5 yards on first down in today's game. *Clemson won the turnover margin, yet lost the game. It was the first time that has happened this year. Clemson had been 7-1 over the last two years when it has won the turnover margin under Bowden.
