Big Thursday Activities To Spark Fan Momentum for USC Game

by -

CLEMSON - Clemson University will "mourn" the death of Cocky, the University of South Carolina mascot, on Big Thursday Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Outdoor Theater on campus.

A fitting funeral service for the Gamecock, including a procession, sermon and cremation arranged by Tiger Platoon, will be followed by a pep rally to initiate the excitement among students and fans for the upcoming rivalry football game on Nov. 25.

Because the Clemson-USC game is Thanksgiving weekend, the Student Alumni Association, which organizes Big Thursday activities, moved them to the week before the game. The event also will feature a highlight video of the best moments in the rivalry, Clemson cheerleaders and Rally Cats and a performance by Tigeroar. The Student Alumni Association will give away "Cocky sandwiches."

"Although Big Thursday will be celebrated early, it will spark the excitement to inspire our fans until game day," said junior Helen Moses, a biological sciences major from Sumter and Big Thursday co-chair. "It's important for Clemson students and fans to come on the 16th and show our team that our support and excitement remains with them over Thanksgiving week."

Big Thursday stems from the days when Clemson and USC played their football games on Thursday night during the week of the state fair in Columbia, a tradition from 1896 until 1959.
