Tigers Fall on Senior Day at Littlejohn |
CLEMSON -- Despite 20 points and 16 rebounds from center Sharrod Ford, Clemson was unable to get a win on "Senior Day" against Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Yellow Jacket held the Tigers to 36.4 % shooting (20% in the first half) and cruised to the 79-60 victory.
Georgia Tech (20-8, 7-7 in the ACC) jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind 3-3 shooting to start the game. At the 16:22 mark, during a Clemson (10-16, 3-12 ACC) possession, a power failure hit the Clemson campus and Littlejohn Coliseum lost power which delayed the game 27 minutes. Clemson went on an 8-0 run after the power failure to cut the margin to 9-8. Clemson's defense held Tech without a point for 7:01. A dunk by Jack off a steal by Anthony McHenry gave Tech an 11-8 lead. Clemson then hit a dry spell and Tech went on a 14-0 run to take a 25-9 lead. Clemson made just 3 of its first 20 shots from the field to start the game. The Tigers cut the margin to eight points at halftime, 27-19. Clemson made just 5-25 shots from the field in the first half and missed all seven of its three-point attempts. Tech also shot 0-7 from three-point range, but did hit 10-27 from the field. Tech moved the lead to 16 points with a 11-6 run to open the second half. But, Clemson cut the margin to 47-40 with 10:09 left on a three-point goal by Shawan Robinson, Clemson's top three-point shooter for the season. But Tech came back with 12-3 run to move the advantage back to 16 with 7:13 left and put the game out of reach. Seniors Chris Hobbs and Beau Shay made the starting lineup for the Tigers. It was the first career start for Shay, a walk-on from Galesburg, IL. Shay had one of the game's highlights, as he made a jumper with 35 seconds left for his first field goal in Littlejohn Coliseum. Olu Babalola and Vernon Hamilton both scored 10 points for the Tigers while Chey Christie added nine points. Hobbs ended his Clemson career at Littejohn with 4 points and 4 rebounds. Georgia Tech was led by Marvin Lewis with 18 points, and B.J. Elder with 17.
