Throwing Error in Ninth Propels Jackets Over Tigers, 9-8 |
FORT MILL, SC -- Clemson appeared to be on cruise control, up early 7-0 on number one seeded Gerogia
Tech, but after a Tiger throwing error in the ninth inning it was Georgia Tech, that was in the driver's seat of the
the ACC tournament.
With the game tied at 8-8 in the ninth, Georgia Tech's Bryan Prince scored the game-winner from second when Tiger first-baseman Mike Calitri couldn’t could come up with the throw from second-baseman Ryan Riley and the ball found its way into the Yellow Jackets dugout.
The Tigers (44-15) had led the Yellow Jackets (45-14) by as much as 7 runs early
in the game with 2-run singles by Jeff Baker and Casey Stone.
Georgia Tech cut the lead to 7-6 with 1 run in the fourth and five runs in the sixth on Jason Basil's two-run single,
and Derik Goffena's three-run homer.
Both teams added runs in the seventh to make it 8-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Georgia Tech's Brad Stockton was ruled safe with a single
on a controversial play at first where Tiger first-baseman Mike Calitri was ruled pulled off the bag by the throw. All American Mark Teixeira then doubled in Singleton to tie the game but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Prince singled and then went to second when Basil walked. Ryan Riley's throwing error ended the game on a possible inning-ending double play for the Tigers.
"We made some tremendous defensive plays, but we were also just a little bit sloppy at different times where we could have made plays," said Clemson head coach Jack Leggett.
Nick Glaser was saddled with the loss for Clemson and Jeff Watchko was the
winner for Georgia Tech.
Clemson will next face Virginia on Saturday at 3:30 PM EST in an elimination game. For the Tigers to win
the ACC crown they must win 3 games in 24 hours. They must defeat Virginia, and then defeat either FSU or Georgia Tech in the evening, and also win the ACC title game on Sunday.
