Mottl Shuts Down NCSU, 9-0
CLEMSON, SC -- Three Clemson pitchers combined for a two-hitter and Clemson bats came alive for 12 hits as the Tigers claimed a 9-0 shutout over NC State Saturday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Ryan Mottl pitched seven innings of one-hit baseball and was relieved in the eighth inning by Matt Additon, who tied the Tiger record with his 87th appearance in the orange and purple. Current Cincinnati Red Scott Winchester also had 87 appearances for the Tigers.
Wolfpack first baseman Mike Prochaska had NC State's only hit through the first eight innings. Andy Baxter had the only other hit of the night in the ninth inning to right field off B.J. LaMura. The shutout was Clemson's fifth of the season.
Clemson, which had only three hits in a 5-1 loss in the series opener Friday night, wasted no time at the plate Saturday. The Tigers scored three runs on three hits in the first inning and added two runs on three hits in the third to cruise to a 5-0 lead.
Clemson exploded again in the sixth inning for four runs on five hits. Casey Stone led off with a base hit and then Patrick Boyd plated Stone on a double. Khalil Greene hit in Boyd and then Jarrod Schmidt hit his second home run of the season to knock in Greene. It was the Tigers' second home run of the night. Jeff Baker had his third homer of the season in the third. It was a solo shot.
Boyd finished 2 for 4 on the night after getting a single in the first inning to go with his sixth-inning double. The hit in the first snapped a 0 for 21 hitting slump dating back to the first game at North Carolina March 31.
Mottl, who was 0-1 with a 12.33 ERA in three previous starts against NC State, improved to 6-2 with the win. It was Mottl's 29th career win, which tied him for third in the school record book with current Pittsburgh Pirate Kris Benson. Dan D'Amato was pegged with the loss to fall to 5-4 on the year.
The win improved the Tigers to 27-7 overall and 5-3 in the ACC, while the loss dropped NC State to 20-15 and 6-8.
Jarrod Schmidt (4-0, 1.79 ERA) will get the start on the mound for the Tigers in the rubber game on Sunday while NC state will counter with Prochaska (2-2, 2.45 ERA). The game will begin at 2:00 PM. Advanced general admission tickets for Wednesday's Clemson vs. South Carolina baseball game will be sold at the Sunday game vs. NC State.
