by -

Clemson, SC - Tyler Lumsden pitched a three-hit shutout in leading #18 Clemson to a 2-0 victory over Old Dominion on Friday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. With the win, Clemson improved to 6-3, while Old Dominion fell to 5-6 overall.

The Tigers were lead by the pitching of sophomore lefthander Tyler Lumsden, who threw his first career shutout and complete game against the Monarchs in a game that lasted just two hours and one minute. It was also the last shutout by a Tiger pitcher since April 20, 2001, when Steve Reba shut out Georgia Tech.

Lumsden (3-0), a Roanoke, VA native, struck out seven batters and walked only one, while throwing just 101 pitches in the game. Lumsden has now thrown 16.1 consecutive innings without allowing a runner to reach third base.

Justin Verlander (2-2) suffered the hard-luck loss for Old Dominion. He struck out six and walked one batter in eight innings pitched.

The Tigers put one run on the board in the sixth inning, which was all the scoring they needed. Zane Green led off the inning with a single to left field. Michael Johnson doubled down the right-field line, moving Green to third. Brad McCann then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Green.

Clemson scored its second run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Green led off with his third hit of the game, an infield single. Johnson then walked and Green advanced to second. With the count at 1-2, McCann hit a single down the leftfield line, scoring Green. McCann finished the game with two hits and both RBIs after going just 1-for-his-last-22, while Green had three hits and scored two runs.

The Tigers will take on the Monarchs in the second game of the three-game series on Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
