Charlie Whitehurst knew he would be under tremendous scrutiny coming in to the 2005 season. As a quarterback, you will receive the glory for winning and the criticism for losing. Whitehurst has seen both ends of the spectrum in his time at Clemson.
This season Whitehurst is off to a solid start. His interceptions are down. He has thrown three interceptions through five games, but two interceptions should be credited to his receivers. He has passed for 1104 yards and four touchdowns giving him a 4 to 1 touchdown to interception ratio. Whitehurst’s completion percentage is up to 66.1%, also improved over last year. Some of Whitehurst’s critics say he is still locking onto his receivers. The numbers say differently. In the Maryland game, Whitehurst completed a pass to eight different receivers, and against Wake Forest he completed a pass to nine different receivers. There has not been a go to guy develop, but Whitehurst is spreading the ball around. The area Whitehurst needs improvement is in yards per attempt. He is only averaging 6.65 yards per attempt. The Tigers do focus heavily on the underneath passing game, but that number needs to be higher. He has not been flawless, but his play has resembled the 2003 Whitehurst, but it is in a different offense. Back up Will Proctor has delivered in his one opportunity. He put together the final drive against Texas A&M, while Whitehurst was out with a concussion. Proctor has only attempted four passes, but he showed he is capable of leading this team. Grade: B
