Will NIL eventually bring on the decline of the NFL?

1

Nov 22, 2024, 9:11 AM

If you could play 4 years of college ball and put $10 million in the bank, why not just get your degree, call it a day, and enjoy your life? Imagine being 22 years old, having your health and generational wealth. And if you can win something while you are in college, even better. But why risk injury playing against the top 10% of football players in the world?

There are kids racking up debt in medical school right now and be 60 before they earn $10 million…and they have to pay off those loans.

Bogus.

The NCAA rules against it violates federal law. Those rules were the cancer.

The courts cured it.

Colleges that do not belong to the power 2 will have football teams that are dead within 3 years. Plus, look at the number of players that listened to the “grass is greener” spill and are stuck in the transfer portal.

And with the 101 player roster rule, the portal will be huge.

105, but no school has to give that many******

Wrong. That actually applies to you.

Nov 22, 2024, 1:52 PM [ in reply to You cannot see the forest for the trees ]

The forest is the free market.
NIL and the portal are both about freedom.
Freedom to earn fair market value.
Freedom of movement.

The trees are the conferences and the individual athletes. Paradigm shifts create winners and losers. The smart market players position themselves to take advantage of those shifts.

We're not a Communist country. College football isn't a government welfare system for marginal athletes ir mismanaged conferences. Not, should it be.

The NFL is an absolute behemoth. Take a look at TV ratings for any NFL game and compare it to the absolutely best NCAA game. It's shocking.

They won't let NCAA NIL impact their product. I could see rookie salaries getting a bump to address the situation you are referencing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doesn't matter.

NCAA athletes' careers end when their eligibility does.

NFL athletes' careers end when they get to old or too hurt to beat out younger, healthier guys.

If done college athletes get enough NIL $$ that they don't choose the NFL, the NFL will simply draft the best if whoever is left.

Given the very small geographical fan base overlap between college and NFL, it's likely to not make much difference.

And yes, there are a few geographical overlaps, like LA with 2 pro teams and 2 BIG teams. Otherwise, the cities with pro teams generally don't have the college attendence that stand alone college towns do.

Examples of the former: Nashville, Seattle, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Miami, New Orleans, Cincinnati.

Examples of the latter: Clemson, Tuscaloosa, Athens, Columbus, Lincoln, Knoxville, Ann Arbor, Tallahassee, Gainesville, Auburn, Iowa City, Stillwater, Provo...

"NCAA athletes' careers end when their eligibility does."

Why? Seems like age discrimination. Need some seniors losing their eligibility to sue the NCAA for civil rights and anti-trust and labor violations.

Or are you saying the NCAA can set eligibility rules?

It is also going to be interesting when these players find out

they can't change teams in the NFL every season if they get their feefees hurt like in college now.

Heck, let's really stir things up and let college athletes have 10 years of eligibility.

Whether ratings decline or not, I do believe it will hurt the overall NFL product. If you are getting paid in CFB, you may not be as hungry or driven to succeed in the NFL. The players who aren't getting the massive NIL are going to be the ones who benefit the most in the NFL. They will be more driven to succeed.

I sure hope so. If anything i want the king of football and take over completely and that is college football. I hate nfl to be honest.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No. It will make the NFL better. Football is a developmental sport.

1

Nov 22, 2024, 10:23 AM

It will allow players to stay in college and develop, thus preparing them for more likely success in the NFL.

NFL players are professionals that work for the ownership of their team and NIL has nothing to do with them. Come on.

Re: Will NIL eventually bring on the decline of the NFL?

Nov 22, 2024, 10:39 AM

Yes it does. Anytime you see a professional athlete in a commercial, or on packaging, that is NIL.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Again, commercial endorsements have nothing to do with the NFL.

Nov 22, 2024, 10:47 AM

You don't see Mahomes wearing Chiefs' gear or logos while he's advertising for State Farm.

I know, I've made that same point many times. "Curry represents Subway without any Warriors gear".

My point above is that NFL players get NIL just like college players do. ValleyCoot alluded to NIL not being a thing for pros. It's the exact same...individual contracts, no schools (or NFL teams) involved in the deal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Again, commercial endorsements have nothing to do with the NFL.

1

Nov 22, 2024, 10:58 AM

The problem lies in the fact that NIL is used to sway recruits and transfers to a school of the NIL source's allegiance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Will NIL eventually bring on the decline of the NFL?

Nov 22, 2024, 11:03 AM

Well for one, maybe 1% of kids are getting these deals (if that is event accurate). So I don't think that is much to be of concern.

There are cases where I could see the NIL helping the NFL. Think about all of the late bloomers who come from financial hardships that bounce after their junior year b/c of one good season then fizzle out in the league because they weren't ready. Same kid now is able to earn a degree, take of the people he feels obligated to take care of, and develop another year.

It's just as easy to make up scenarios where something positive happens than something negative.

The NFL had $20.5B in revenue last year

Nov 22, 2024, 11:50 AM

they’ll figure it out

Re: The NFL had $20.5B in revenue last year

Nov 22, 2024, 5:35 PM

They still only run a ~10% profit margin. How do you think having over a hundred new competitors for players, fans and revenue will affect that bottom line? They will be forced to get into the Merger and Acquisition game to consolidate the market. Maybe we can be a farm team for the Falcons.
