I confess, I’m envious of bourbon guys and the ease of storage and length of enjoyment, with so little risk when buying a bottle. I have to keep my wine collection in the dark, at 54°, with perfect humidity, and even then with perfect storage and handling there’s a chance of cork taint, light strike, or prem ox

Regarding nose and hints of caramel or vanilla, it reminds me of the halcyon days of my youth spent summering in Father’s chateau in Vienna, thinking I was enjoying Swiss cheese while not knowing Tenili from Pule.

I also dare someone to describe bourbon without using the words caramel or vanilla, it’s not possible. It’s like people who think Caymus is the pinnacle of wine and their use of “smooth.”

Personal experience about bourbon and taste that I think Ive shared before.

I don’t do bourbon tastings. I mean, I will, but I will just say “yeah that’s pretty good” or “oh yeah it’s really good.” But vanilla and caramel are tastes that I have found in bourbons before. They are most distinct in my opinion in bourbons that are aiming for that flavor profile and searching out “distinguished palates”. But once they’re identified they’re identified and in my opinion not worth talking about. What I most often appreciate and recognize in bourbon and comment on is its harshness or lack there of. If you can make a strong alcohol bourbon that has bourbon characteristics and it not be harsh, it amazing. And in my drunken opinion, it’s that simple. Take sips of bourbon with air, breathe it in. And if it doesn’t scorch your throat… somebody put in that work. Now my personal experience…
When I had Covid. One of the first signs was when I was sipping on bourbon to ease my cold symptoms. And all I could taste was burnt bitter charcoal. It was pungent and forward. I thought someone had poisoned my bottles of bourbon, until I realized what was actually going on. That kind of changed my opinion of expensive distilled beverages forever. But I still love bourbon.

It’s Boomer Wine swill. It tastes like the color purple and is made to a recipe, it’s basically the opposite of everything I love about old world wine, namely terroir.

But was given a bottle of Crown royal for Christmas that made it from house to house for a few years. I took one drink from it when I first got it, and never touched it again. About 7 or 8 years later, I gave the bottle to my neighbor, who is a liquor drinker, and the next day he asked me if I was trying to poison him. He said that ish was turrible.

be. Blanton's is notorious for wax cracking. It's a rarity with older Blanton's to find one with perfect wax.

not too common. I have some opens that were probably popped 6 or 7 or 8 years ago, and they're still good. Older/dusty Beams in the decanters that are only 80 or 86 proof--those go downhill pretty quickly, and usually aren't enjoyable to drink within a month or two, so those need to be put down pretty fast. Also had Jefferson's 18 Yr. Presidential that turned cloudy and gross due to a bad cork; sucks because that was a spendy bottle.
You can also put argon on whiskey, same trick works with wine (although it only extends wine marginally, of course).
