What’s the purpose of the yellowjacket? To swarm around a trash can?

What is their part in the ecosystem? I’m curious.
Now I understand why GT chose them as a mascot. GT is in Atlanta and that city is mostly a trash can/ dump, so I get it. Yellowjackets must be everywhere around town. The yellowjacket is as ATL as Waffle House and doing bicep curls on the sideline10 minutes before kickoff. So that mascot makes s sense.
But other than showing me where trash receptacles are and stinging me in the ankle, I have no clue what these pests are good for.
Thoughts?

This is a good question. I don't know the answer, but the mascot seems to fit.
Yellowjackets are occasionally dangerous, but mostly just annoying. Just like Georgia Tech.

They are pollinators. That is their main purpose.

Secondary purpose is to annoy via trash cans as you state. Per orkin.com -
Yellow jackets are pollinators and may also be considered beneficial because they eat beetle grubs, flies and other harmful pests. However, they are also known scavengers who eat meat, fish and sugary substances, making them a nuisance near trash receptacles and picnics.

If we didn't have the yellow jackets, coots, or Seminoles the Tigers wouldn't have anyone to embarrass year after year.

I think they were the only insects that had built in pocket protectors during the slide rule era
