Blackstock, a junior, told the Daily Press in Hampton Roads on Wednesday that he has yet to hire an agent but plans to do so in the near future. Once Blackstock has signed with an agent, he is unable to return to UVa for a senior season, according to NCAA rules.
The biggest factor in his decision to turn professional early was his 17-month-old son – Savion – according to Blackstock.
"I wanted to take care of him," Blackstock said. "I also just didn’t want to jump to any conclusions because of what I did [on the field this past season]. I didn’t want the hype to get to me. I took it real conservative and let the answers come to me."
Blackstock indicated that he had used the NFL’s draft advisory committee, which is comprised of NFL personnel, to help him make his final decision. The Newport News native said he was told he is likely to be taken in the NFL Draft in the second round.
This season, Blackstock led the nation’s linebackers with 11 sacks but finished just 10th on the team with 45 tackles. Blackstock’s 11-sack season ranks fourth all-time in school history. He was named to the All-ACC second team at the end of the season.
