If you find yourself on I85 near Salisbury, The Smoke Pit

is the real deal. Best brisket I've had in NC by a wide margin.
New Sarum brewing has some good brews round those parts as well, although I have not been into their taproom.

to a few events up that way and I really like their beers. The Hurley Park Blood Orange Wheat Ale especially stood out to me. It's an excellent brew for hot weather. I'll file the Smoke Pit away for another trip up that way, but the Mambo Grill in Salisbury was exceptionally good Cuban cuisine last time we were there.

The 'barbecue' chicken at the Barbecue King is freaking excellent. I've never even had their pulled pork, but I don't hear people talking about it around here, either. The sides are all good, but nothing stands out as being particularly excellent. But the BBQ dipped fried chicken is THAT good.

Most of those in the article have way too much sauce.

No sauce please, I want to take the meat and the smoke. Sauce just hides bad bbq.
Spoon's looks like the real deal.

blasphemy. It's in Syracuse, NY. So if you're lucky enough to make the trip this year seek this place out. A bunch of bikers started this place.
JimBeam will vouch for this place.

Jim N' Nicks actually isn't bad for a corporate joint.

Definitely not a top BBQ draw, but it won't hurt your feelings to have to go there. But yeah...it doesn't really belong on that list other than the fact that Charlotte isn't exactly a barbecue destination to begin with.
