I was refreshing the page like a mad man. My heart was racing trying to beat the clock. My wife was starting to think I’m crazy. But I was trying to beat inspector m to the first comment. Many people would like to play collegiate sports. Few have the ability to do it.
An even smaller number has the ability to be a star at any one sport.
That number gets smaller still if looking for an athlete who can star at two sports.
And that gets REAL small when looking for a genuine collegiate star in three sports.
Frank Gillespie is one of the select few.
Before Clemson:
Frank Gillespie’s journey to Clemson was an interesting one, to say the least. He was accompanying a friend on his visit to Clemson. But it was hardly the visit that either of them expected. According to ClemsonTigers.com:
Clemson Head Football Coach Frank Howard remembered the visit very well. Gillespie along with Jack Pollack, was attending the Blue Ridge School for Boys at Hendersonville, NC. Pollack asked Gillespie to go on the trip to Clemson with him. Pollack said he was going to a football tryout at Clemson.
Pollack was in the middle of the tryouts when Howard asked Gillespie “aren’t you going to suit up and try out?” Gillespie said no at first. Eventually, he put on the football pads and a uniform.
“I told Frank, come on over and I’ll give you a tryout, said Howard.”
“When I was younger, I’d put on the pads and work out with the players some,” explained Howard.
“I remember very well giving Frank Gillespie a tryout, which was legal in those days. I hadn’t heard much about him, he was originally from Beckley, West Virginia. I lined up in front of him and told him to charge into me. Whomp! Bam!
I said, “That’s enough, son.
“Coach, I thought we were going to work out,” he told me.
“We have, welcome to Clemson. I signed Gillespie on the spot.”
While at Clemson:

“Gillespie was the model student-athlete during his career at Clemson. He was an excellent student, double majoring in electrical engineering and textile engineering. As if that wasn’t enough, he was a starter on three Tiger teams, football, basketball, and baseball. He was also the student body President.”

Another ClemsonTigers.com article described Gillespie this way:
“Gillespie won the McKelvin Award as the top all-around athlete in the Southern Conference for the 1947-48 academic year. Gillespie, former Tiger pitcher Kris Benson and former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson are the only Clemson athletes named a conference athlete of the year in school history.
Gillespie was the last Clemson athlete to letter in the three major sports of football basketball and baseball. The native of West Virginia lettered in baseball in 1943 before spending three years in the Army. After returning to Clemson, he was a starting guard on the Tiger football team for three years. He was also a starting guard in basketball for three years, and played three more years of baseball, where he made the All-State team as a senior.”

Somehow, that seems a bit more impressive than my resume at Clemson.
And, yet, it doesn’t stop there. According to Christian Index.org, Gillespie was not just a hero in collegiate sports, but also a hero for his country:
“He interrupted his college experience by joining the United States Army in 1943, spending 3½ years in Europe fighting for his country in WWII. He was in General George Patton’s Third Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
Gillespie returned to Clemson after the War and continued his academic and athletic pursuits.”

After Clemson:
The Philadelphia Eagles selected Frank Gillespie with the 71st Pick (7th Round) of the 1949 NFL Draft. Gillespie, however, chose professional baseball. He played two seasons in the minor leagues.
After his playing days ended, Gillespie began his career with IBM. He later put his many talents to work serving Christ. According to BaptistCourrier.com:
“Preparing to move into fulltime ministry from IBM, Gillespie earned a degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North Carolina and also studied at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kentucky. He pastored of First Baptist Church in Iva, S.C., for 10 years.
Subsequently returning to IBM, Gillespie became a key part of the early history of Bell Shoals Baptist Church in Brandon, Fla., teaching Sunday School for various ages for 25 years. After retiring from a 33-year IBM career, he earned a doctorate at Luther Rice Seminary in Georgia.”

“In the course of time Gillespie was called into the ministry, prepared himself through theological training, and served as pastor of First Baptist Church of Iva, SC for many years. He loved people and in his years of retirement served the church in every way he could.
For the entirely of his Christian life Frank Gillespie was a powerful witness for Christ and had no compunction about sharing his faith in the grocery story, at the ball park, or in his neighborhood.
Ephesus pastor Billy Godwin stated at the memorial service that Frank Gillespie, like the apostle Paul, had “fought a good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.” Godwin added, “Dr. Frank has greatly enriched the ministry of our church and enhanced our lives by his faithful walk and consistent witness.”

Frank Gillespie was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 in football, basketball, and baseball. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 94.

South Carolina Highway 71 is a 14.98 mile-long state highway entirely in Abbeville County that runs from the east end at SC 20 in Abbeville to the west end at SC 81 east of Lowndesville. Purple Heart recipient Thomas D. Howie was from Abbeville.
 
Lake Secession is a town of 1,000 in Abbeville County, South Carolina located next to the lake with the same name. The lake is a 1,450-acre reservoir on the Rocky River, a tributary of the Savannah River and Lake Russell. The lake was formed by construction of Lake Secession Damm (aka Rocky River Damm) in 1940 by the city of Abbeville, who owns and manages the lake, as a New Deal Works Progress Administration project. The lake and damm produce hydro-electric power for the area. The lake is lined with mostly residential lots with no county or state parks, but there are several nearby including Calhoun Falls and Richard B Russell state parks and the Hart County Botanical Garden. Lake Secession is an excellent fishery for black crappie, largemouth bass, bream, and catfish with public access on the upper side off SC 184.

Whenever I hear Abbeville, I think of domination in High School football.
My kids went to Liberty & Abbeville was always in Liberty’s Region. That was an automatic loss.
Abbeville moved to 1A starting this year (they’ll never lose another HS football game). At least they are out of Liberty’s Region!

There is a display in someone's yard going into town with each state championship year on it. Can't remember how many years are on it but the thing has been extended to the point that it must be 75 feet long.
