someone will ask where I'm from, and I start with the Greenville, SC area. Blank stare. Sort of near Clemson University? More of a blank stare. Upstate SC? Stare with obvious look of don't know what Upstate means. Finally, I give up and say between ATL and Charlotte. That usually sews up the conversation.

You would think they had done something in the last quarter century. They will simply be another one of those northern schools like BC that no one cares about and everyone beats every year.

Those who have the blessing of a tribe are fine in my book. You're kidding yourself if you think some of the names weren't chosen to play on the 'savage' reputation of the Native American.

do some research
Feb 27, 2013, 2:16 PM
|
|
In a Sports Illustrated poll, 75% of native americans did not find "Redskins" offensive
In a national survey, 90% of Native Americans were not offended.
http://www.volokh.com/posts/1242423155.shtml
And check out this excerpt:
Finally, while I'd have thought that most Indians would indeed be offended by the term "Redskins," given that it has often been used as a pejorative, the results that the surveys report are not at all implausible: Given that naming a team after some person or group is usually a sign of respect -- one would rarely name a team after something that one thinks is weak or contemptible (the U.C. Santa Cruz Banana Slugs are a rare and facetious exception) -- it seems quite reasonable that many Indians would focus on that more than they would on disrespectful uses of the same term in other contexts.

That would have been the first one I changed. A lot of them were, at least plausibly, tributes to the tribes. "Redskins," is like calling a team the Wetbacks.

voted to keep it. Just like my high school went up for a vote regarding our mascot of "Indians"...70% voted in favor to keep it, 20% didn't care, and 10% wanted it changed. County ignored the vote (both at school level and at town level) and changed the mascot.

People are generally self-interested and unconcerned with bigotry that doesn't affect them.
County looked after it's own interests, primarily public relations. Have there been *any* negative effects of the name change?

is from the 1996 Gator Bowl.
In my experience, Syracuse fans were some of the most foul-mouthed and obnoxious fans I had ever encountered.
Reminded me an awful lot of Maryland's repugnant fan base.

They are, after all, the coots of the ACC...
And I like how they mentioned the fact that we failed to mention the final score of the Gator Bowl when we played them... Maybe someone should let them know that no one cares about a 1995 Gator Bowl but them.
