She missed a few games earlier in the season with an undisclosed illness. the last 2 weeks or so she's been in concussion protocol. So she's missed abut a month of the season with injury. When she did come back after the undisclosed illness she wasn't the same. she struggled pitching. not to start games but after the 2 or 3 inning she couldn't get an out.

Just terrible play in the infield including catcher. Duke in contrast just flat out makes the difficult plays in the infield. However, the inability to hit the ball other than weak grounders against good pitching has always been the biggest problem.

Plus they don’t have instruction on throwing to the proper base to prevent runners advancing, and that confusion on how to handle runners caught off base points right back to the coaching staff not working on these details. The entire infield has 3 seasons of experience with the exception of Knowler. Very frustrating.

Exactly.
Rittman was the right man to do what we needed. Excellent experience getting a program going from inception to now. I tell you who got a good staff, Virginia. I know it probably won't happen, but it'd be nice to put him in an admin role, advisory position like Dabo gets. Then hire the best staff we can. We need a pitching coach and a true hitting coach. Not all coaches enjoy the recruiting and development aspects of the game.
Duke is an excellent model. She's building a program for consistency. So is Allison Kwolek. Allison may be our best hire since Dabo. I hope Neff takes a hard peek under the hood. Ask the players.

She has had a good year at the plate but can’t seem to get control of her fielding lately. The team missing Cagle badly this weekend. Pitching woes too. Something is just off this season and it’s hard to figure out.

I have feeling there is more to the Val Cagle story than we’re getting. When she has played it’s nowhere near Cagle numbers. Knowler getting hurt was rough too but now she’s struggling.

Think that about sums up the season... poor infield defense, season-long inability to get hits. Hate to see what next year brings!

I did not see any bunting by Clemson in this game to a runner up.it looks to me that John Rittman gets out coached at times during a game.

Going in reverse. Before the concussion protocol stuff w/ Val, was clear she had been burnt down to the ground by over-reliance.
My fear is that despite how poor the season has gone, the bottom is gonna fall out hard when those 9 seniors move on. & not only that, that will kill off the fan excitement for the program.

When I spoke yesterday about coaching… the response from one poster was condescending and mocking… seems others are coming around.
Their is no way this team should be getting swept at home… even by a top 5 team which Duke isn’t and it will show when they play real competition just like how Stanford came out here and beat them last year.
One poster in this thread said it and hit the nail on the head. Rittman has done what was needed to get the program off the ground and running but he’s taking this program as far as he can.
It will take a whole new staff for this program to reach the WCWS which is the goal.

Rittman isnt going anywhere - he is trying to rebuild his legacy. I suspect that KJ and Courtney (the 2 primary assistants) may leave after this year - likely with KJ getting a HC job. If that happens we will have to bring in some new assistants but I’m not sure it really matters. From what I hear Rittman handcuffs the assistants and won’t let them do much. You would think that Jesse Harper would play a big role in hitting but she doesn’t.
There is always more to it than what is said the same is true with this team and players on it. We all thought this might be “our year” (and it still could be) but coaching has been a liability and we have struggled at times with hitting, pitching, and fielding - and often more than 1 at once. The truth of the matter is we are a better, more talented team than our record shows but we played the games that gave us our record. That said, I will miss the players leaving and may lament what might have been but I will continue to support the team regardless of how the rest of the season goes

These comments about the coaching situation sure is concerning, but I have sensed you are pretty close to the team based from tha accuracy of your injury/illness updates. Rittman has built tons of collateral so of it will take a dismantling before he leaves. Perhaps he will decide to hang it up before things up end as empty as the baseball was left after Coach Lee.

I expect Rittman to at least finish out his contract unless he chooses to step into a more administrative role which means at least a couple more years. I am really hoping if there is some coaching turnover that some of the dynamics might change and we see more development of the players. Despite all the players who have exhausted their eligibility, there are enough pieces available to build a defense if we can bring in/develop some pitching (and change the approach at bat).
I think the portal might open up a bit for us after this season as I suspect some of the better pitchers didn’t want to come to Clemson and have to “compete” with Val (I’m also not sure that the coaching staff wanted to bring players in who might). We definitely need at least 1 and probably 2 transfer pitchers. An infielder or 2 and a couple outfielders would be good as well. The 1 thing I’m not sure of is how many transfer departures we will have. I’m pretty sure about 1 (didn’t play much) but we need to hang on to what we have.

Rittman’s contract extension from ‘22 goes out through ‘27. I would guess he would need another extension next year if that’s as big a factor for recruiting like is often cited for basketball etc. If so, next season will be an interesting decision time for Neff if there’s a big rebuild season. Also, by then maybe the conference realignment situation will play a factor. I just can’t see this coaching staff competing in-game or in recruiting against the bulk of the SEC powerhouses. Heck next year we pick up Stanford.

It is hard for anybody to deny that this has been a tremendously disappointing season with all Clemson had coming back & being so senior based as a team. Remember preseason they were talk about breaking through to CWS finally. At this point in the season you are kinda are what you are & this team has regressed not improved & that is tremendously disappointing. Does not bode well for next season at all.

I think everyone is disappointed, but has anyone considered that maybe we over-performed the past couple of years? I think we have actually played a little better without Valerie in the line-up, as silly as that sounds. Her pitching has been pretty suspect, as when I have seen her she has gotten hit hard. Maybe that has also affected her fielding, as it has not been up to par either. I think Rittman is fine as a coach and way too early to bail out on him. Starting a program may be a little different than sustaining a program, but I think he knows how to do both. In essence we are still building a program.
When he has been "out coached", it has been by teams with just better players. Great players make great coaches.

Guess we will have to agree to disagree on that one. UVA and Furman were not better teams, neither were Minnesota, Boston College, or NC St. The coaching staff’s decision to not try and bunt Hyatt with the tying run on 3rd and 1 out against Duke cost us dearly. The coaching staff wants HR and the expense of hits. I could go on and on but it doesn’t change anything.
I am not calling for a change in the coach (that is a decision for the AD) but our coaching staff does not do a great job with in-game decision-making.
