OT: Is Hash a Side or a Main?

Created an SCBBQ Survey (still taking replies) a while back that about 1200 people have submitted. Here was an interesting finding: Hash didn't place in the top 3 sides. When I posted this on the I Love SC BBQ Facebook group, a number of people said they didn't consider hash to be a side item. While I get that, I still found it surprising. In my mind, it definitely belongs on the survey as a side item, even if it is sometimes the star/co-star of the plate. That said, in the SCBBQ cookbook Going Whole Hog, I didn't put it in the Sides section, but in a section all its own. I guess I'm contradicting myself! Thoughts?

In my family it's always been the main course. Served over Rice or toast is my favorite. I like cole slaw with it too. So the later would be the sides.

It’s either chopped/pulled pork bbq OR hash as the main dish. I usually eat the hash over rice

Main. Never have it unless there was a lot of Q left over. Don't have any other meat when it is on the plate, so it would have to be the main.

I have noticed that some upstate Food Lion stores are carrying Dowd's (Newberry) and Lee's BBQ Hash (Lake Greenwood) in their meat department. Lee's is packed in plastic cups while Dowd's is in glass jars. Tried both and loved them both even though they taste a little different.

OK, low country red hash or Upstate style hash. I have seen upstate down to Newberry, with the other counties making red hash

It's both! Say you're having ribs, well then it's a side. but if you're having hash on toast, it's a main. Either way you can't go wrong.

I agree with “either” as it depends on what you have to go with it. Have had it as the main course on rice the last 2 days because I had nothing else prepared to go with it.

At Maurice's Piggie Park it's a main.
You can get a plate with pulled pork and hash and rice with your choice of two sides.
You can substitute the two sides and hush puppies and slaw for extra hash and rice.
Which solidifies it as a main. Imo

Down here in the mid low country, we have 2 kinds of hash. One has liver in it and one does not. I just flat out don't like the liver hash because of its bitterness. The best hash I have ever eaten was in a little diner in Sumter and it was made from Boston butts. I talked the recipe out of the elderly gentleman who cooked the hash. I would share it with you but it is out in my kitchen in my shop. I will retrieve it some time today and will share it if wanted tonight. Just remind me tonight. My memory is not good.

The ideal BBQ plate consists of chopped/pulled pork sauced the way you like it, a good pile of hash and rice your style, a good pile of slaw, bread and butter pickles, pit cooked meat skins and several slices of white bread.

Unpopular opinion but hash is only a legit food in SC and GA. Everyone else avoids it if they even know what it is to start with. My opinion is leave it out completely and do something else edible.

It was a nasty-looking gray color that really had me questioning it.
That was a BIG mistake. Best flavor EVER and usually served over a bowl of rice. Love to have some now.

I grew up with hash being a staple side with BBQ, whether it was served over rice or a piece of bread. My granddad made it frequently, following the recipe that Duke’s on Chestnut in Orangeburg used. After he passed, my grandma started making it and still does to this day. I’ll always consider it to be a side, but I know several who view it as a main. I do like it as a main server over grits.

If you’re at Henry’s Smokehouse in Greenville, then it is a side. If you’re at Duke’s in Orangeburg, than it is a main dish.

In the NFL, the hash marks are 18 feet, six inches wide

In the NCAA, they are 40 feet wide. Many college coaches want the NFL hash marks.
A football field is 160 feet wide. NFL hash marks are 70 feet, 9 inches from the sideline while NCAA hash marks are 60 feet from the sideline. Some experts say the hash marks are why some college players are a bust in the NFL.

Let me start by saying that during my teen years and since, I have been a lover of Dukes BBQ from either the Pepsi Cola plant location or the Fire Station location. (Those of you that know Dukes know what I talking about)
However, back in the 1950s & 60's a man named Ziegler operated a BBQ place out of a concrete block building in St Matthews. Some of the best BBQ you ever put in your mouth and people would come from 50 or more miles away every Thurs, Fri & Sat nights. The place was always packed.
Zieglers hash, though, was not like Dukes at all. It was not red, in fact maybe a brownish gray color and had a slight peppery flavor.
As his business increased in that small block building in St. Matthews, sometime in the early 60's, Mr Ziegler decided to open a location in Columbia. I understand that it was successful, but I never went to it. A few years passed and Mr. Ziegler fell into failing health, and closed the St Matthews location with the Columbia location staying open a couple of years after that.
Though as I said up top that I love some Dukes BBQ, I have looked for a comparable BBQ to Zieglers, but no success. The closest that I found, was a number of years ago in West Columbia at Millinders BBQ at the I26/US378 exit, though their hash, while tasting great and similar, just did not have the saucy consistancy as Zieglers.
Do any of you "oldtimers" like myself have any memories of this place??
Sorry to ramble on!!
Go Tigers !!

I’m from the Pee Dee area and hash and rice is ALWAYs a side with bbq. Where I live now in the Upstate, people don’t even eat hash….sad
And I’ve seen people on here talking about “chopped” bbq? NO. It’s pulled by hand. Chopped bbq is a food sin.

I can see how it could be a main (hash over rice), but I’ve always gotten it as a side in a small bowl.
Now I’m craving hash.
