could be in store for Winthrop...in my hometown of Rock Hill.

Now, that would be a major upheaval, considering how long the school has been there with its major impact on the community, IMO, much much moreso than Limestone's. Just can't imagine they would be in that kind of dire financial situation, although very little surprises me anymore with our economy.

Evidently they had an 8 million deficit in 2023.

Enrollment down over 10%.

That's mot a small budget

Why would they intentionally spend more than they have? Seems very avoidable. When making budgetary decisions (surely by way of a budget review board or spending board), at some point when potential expenses arise, they have to say no. It looks like they were too loose... I'm sure all of the proposed expenses seemed very important at the time, but staying out of bankruptcy would trump all of them.

Just read figure 1.6 of the SC CHE statistical abstract. Both USuC and Clemson have opened the flood gates for enrollment. Especially, USuC. they are taking students they would not admit 20 years ago. They are doing this specifically so that won’t have to raise tuition as fast as they need to. The business of education has to keep rolling along with ever higher costs. Higher education enrollment levels will never reach the levels back i 2010-12. The Biden administration thought they could try and head it off by flooding the country with illegals. But don’t worry, once the dem’s take control of the White House again, they will open the flood gates of immigration again.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgtnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

News from USuC...
"Richardson was the 20th Gamecock arrested since Spurrier was hired in Nov. 2004"

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

Are you suggesting that Biden looked the other way on illegal immigration in order to increase enrollment at secondary education?

Bingo! They had 800 athletes with an enrollment of 1,100. According to the WARN notice they had almost 500 employees. No way that was sustainable.

Limestone has nothing to do with Trump. It was all greed from the top. Money donated specifically for certain areas of the college (the library) was spent on athletic upgrades. We’ve heard rumors like this for years.

Anyone who’s been paying attention to demographics and the escalating cost of attendance knows the enrollment cliff for universities has been formulating for 15-20yrs. The trillions in student debt fueled massive academic spending and enabled decades of inflation way beyond the rest of the economy. That’s the reality. It’s not about a specific president or political party, it’s about the entire system believing this situation could go on forever. I will say the government overtake of the student loan industry as part of Obamacare was a huge factor that kept the inflation going and a correction not occurring earlier.

Limestone's online audits show they have been losing money for six years, but they still built their shiny new student center and admitted more scholarship athletes than paying students. Someone should have sounded an alarm two years ago when their president and CFO both departed within a week of each other.

I hate it for the students, faculty, staff, and local businesses, but the school had already drowned before it started calling for help.

I got my undergrad degree from Winthrop and at that time it was one of the most affordable schools in the state and has now become one of the most expensive. In the last 10 years they went on a building spree, which it now appears they can’t pay for and as enrollment declines, they will soon have the same fate as Limestone.
