Favorite Game of the Watson era?
Apr 12, 2017, 3:27 PM
|
|
This spring/summer I'm rewatching all of our 2014-2016 games in order. A lot of fun so far! Got me thinking...
Other than the national title win, what was your favorite game of the Deshaun Watson era?
My personal pick: 23-13 over Florida State in 2015. To me, it felt like the game that truly blew the lid off our program. Getting over the FSU hump, first win as the #1 ranked team. It felt like up to that point, we were building & building. When Gallman scored the late TD, that's the first time I felt like we were no longer building; we were HERE.
What's your pick?

That fully extended TD grab by the birthday boy Mike Williams, strip sack TD by Vic. In addition to Watson, it was just a great all around game by Clemson.
And yes "Watson hurdles a defender"

The tenacity and guts he displayed was remarkable, he stood in and got hammered and asked for more. Even Jonathan Allen said "that is the toughest guy I've ever played against".
But the final drive, that encapsulated what makes Deshaun DW4. In the biggest game on the biggest stage, he orchestrated a masterpiece with 2 minutes. In all of football it doesn't get any better than throwing the go ahead TD with only 1 second left on the clock. It was for the ages.
One of the Youtube videos of that drive has garnered 274,242 views since January.
In the unlikely event that you haven't seen it.....here it is.

Agree 100%! Best game ever. That's why the original question was other than the title win. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Lol...ok, I'm clearly slowing down.
Sunday night it took me an hour and a half to watch 60 Minutes
So fav would be FSU this year...DW4 beat 'em at their house.
Of course the flogging we gave OSU was equal favorite.

Notre Dame game. Not only was the game great, but the build up was ridiculous. Seemed like 99% of the media thought we were going to get our heads bashed in. Our own governor sent out a statement telling us not to go to the game because of the unsafe rain conditions. Not sure how it was on TV, but best regular season game I've ever been to.

I have been to over the past 28 years, but the ND-Clemson game in the rain was by far the most fun I have ever had at a Clemson game.

First game I saw him play in person. There was no doubt how special he was going to be after that afternoon. I remember the weather and our offense both being perfect that day. I left that day thinking how did he not start against Georgia and Florida State. What might have been if he had.

Deshaun's last game in Death Valley and he was on fire that night. He threw 6 tds and yet his best throw of the night was dropped by Deon Cain in the endzone. Should have had at least 7. Was on pace for 10+ if we didn't take him out. Deshaun solidified himself as the ultimate gamecock killer and fulfilled the promise he made back in high school when he committed.

2 picks for Watson isn't great. The running game didn't get going until Watson opened it up with the pass attack. And then our defense was given about 5 absolute gifts by the OSU offense. 2 missed field goals, 3 MONUMENTAL dropped balls. All 3 dropped balls were 15+ yards (1-2 prolly TDs) and the throws were on the money but the receiver just dropped them. Still a great game and we had some huge plays. My favorite was Scott bulldozing his way into the back fielding and dropping the RB on 4th down almost as soon as he got the ball.

back and forth, a real slug fest like the natty and a must win to keep hope alive.
17-14 at the half
28-20 and the end of the third and Clemson scored 17 points in the 4th.
If I have to pick one game that isn't the natty, Thats the one.
2nd to that would be the Orange Bowl win over Oklahoma. Not gonna lie, I was worried about that game, OU looking for revenge and they have a stable of great young players.

Wife and I were at the UNC 2014 intro. Watson clearly showed Tiger fans what they had expected all along. My favorite game besides the Nat. Championship has to be his beat down of Usuck, 56-7 because it could have been 70-7 for a variety of reasons and everyone watching knew it! The players, especially the coots, recognized how great a talent Watson is and Clemson fans gave him his due!
Go Tigers!

It lit Clemson community on fire as we knew we had something special in DW4.
Next in line: any of the 3 wins over uscJR. Just icing on the greedy "we are elite" cake.
After that you got several: Norte Dame Ohio State Oklahoma FSU Miami

The most memorable was the "flood" game vs ND. I'm sure those of us traveling back to the eastern half of the state have a story to tell.
My personal favorite was the FSU game that year. My son and I had a great time at that game. With kids the game itself often times takes a back seat to all the other stuff going on in and around the stadium. This was the first time he was more a fan of the game like his dad.

probably my favorite after that. What hype leading up to the game. What an atmosphere. What a battle. What a finish. Epic.
After that, I thoroughly enjoyed the poundings he gave Oklahoma and Ohio State. Not only were the games great, but the lead up to all three of them, about how we were out-classed and out-gunned, followed up by complete domination of the opponent...priceless.
Finally, the South Carolina beating this year. They will reel from that one for years. It looked like more of a mismatch than the SC State game.

Man the list is long!
My criteria is 20 years from now what is the one thing that will be said (outside of Beating Bama for the NC). You remember when DW beat SC on one leg to break the freaking 5 bomb! That is what we will remember. That is stuff legends are made of. That is mine.

Or the 2014 UNC game where he broke TB record for most TDs in a single game and was throwing just about every ball with excellent accuracy, especially that dime he threw to Hopper.
