Last night was encouraging

Dec 31, 2022, 11:42 AM

I don't understand all of yall talking like our program is going downhill. Our offense will be hard to stop next year. We will learn to finish drives with Cade and he will learn from his mistakes. Last night hurt but we looked like the better team. We couldn't make a field goal and Dabo screwed ourselves going for the fake and then going for it on 4th later. Tennessee is a great team and look at the numbers we put up on O. We will figure out how to score TDs I truly believe that. I'm excited about next season. Hopefully the rest of yall jump on board or go pull for the #####.

Re: Doesnt matter, They both tell the same story.

Dec 31, 2022, 11:50 AM

We made major mistakes at points and our best FG kicker of all time missed 3 field goals. We could have easily been leading at halftime. Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce our way. Doesn't mean we suck like some of you smart folk think. If we don't win every game yall think the end of the world is coming. There was a ton of promise last night sorry you are blind to it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Doesnt matter, They both tell the same story.

Dec 31, 2022, 12:23 PM

Gardocki was not on the field.

We actually looked a lot better all around last night than we did in any of the DJU games. We just could not finish and were badly out-coached and out-prepped. Our OL, who had been slowly converting to a run-blocking squad out of necessity, suddenly had to pass protect for 60 plays and they sucked at it. It all goes back to the wrong personnel being on the field for 12 games and having no chemistry with the passing offense as a result. Coaching, coaching, coaching.

Heupl may be a chubby weirdo with a lisp, but he is a darn good coach with a staff that is not just people from his Sunday school class.

Not even thinking about the score and they looked better. We looked young and smaller. We played a lot of young guys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We looked like the better team? Wow, got nothing for you on that one.

Dec 31, 2022, 11:52 AM

We shut their O down for a large part of the game and we moved the ball with ease until we got close to the red zone. Not sure how we looked young at points on O because we have a freshman qb lol.

Dec 31, 2022, 11:48 AM [ in reply to We looked like the better team? Wow, got nothing for you on that one. ]

Cade is a stud. He made freshman mistakes yes but if you were not encouraged by our Os potential last night I don't believe you watched the game. We didn't finish drives and we didn't make field goals which was very disappointing but I saw a lot more upside than we had earlier in the season.

Dec 31, 2022, 11:44 AM

We lost to Tenn backups with the majority of our starters. The oline once again was a huge problem. It’s been a consistent weakness for decades. Time to spend some money and upgrade our assistants. Also, need a new vision and plan for recruiting.

Coaching was the reason we lost imo. Dabo went out of his shell trying to spark us when we could have just played safe and won imo.

Wasting your time here, the only thing we have a shot at is becoming the worst/toxic fan base in the world. We already have surpassed the bucknuts and dawgs now we are aiming for the coots. There’s no future with Dabo and company so don’t waste your time watching and don’t spend a dime on the program. This program will become nothing but a failure and the fans are waiting like a kid on Christmas to say I told you so. They want our downfall to come wayyyyyy more then the coot fans do, just hope some of our players find better.

We had 100 more yards. We missed 2 4th down conversations and had 3 missed field goals. We made big mistakes at times and we couldn't finish drives. I thought we moved the ball on O but just couldn't finish. Our D shut them down at times. We could have easily won that game if a couple of plays go the other way but because they didn't we suck right and have no future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You say whatever you want to Judge. I'm disappointed we lost and I think Tennesse earned the W no doubt. That doesn't mean I don't have the right to think we looked like the better team. Yes the score is all that matters in the end. We outplayed them in many parts of the game tho. To act like we go destroyed by them and looked like crap is crazy to me and that's how a lot of people on here are reacting. I don't want us to lose just as much as anybody but that doesn't make me blind to the good positive things that last nights game showed me.

We were favored to win by 4 points based on UT having their most productive 3 players out on offense and their best LB and sack leader also gone. I am aware of each and every player out for the Tigers. So again, we were favored to win the game but did not come close. Period. And we have 8 months to chew on that and digest it along with losing to our arch rival that we mocked for their "Portal Trash" squad until they came to the Valley as huge underdogs and kicked out butt. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth after all those top recruiting classes we keep talking about. Something is not adding up.

Better might not be the right term but we were certainly more consistent. I believe that Tennessee had 6 "3 and outs." They beat us on big plays with their offense and bend don't break with their defense. It was a recipe for a win last night but I don't even think the Tennessee coaching staff would tell you that is sustainable.

I mean the team with the most points is technically the better team yes lol. We could have easily had 15 more points in that game tho on just kicking field goal and making them and that would have changed a lot.

Williams and Randall combined for 6 catches and 85 yards. Ngata had more catches and the same yardage. "Hard to stop" does not really spring to mind for me but I'm just looking at the numbers against one of the worst pass defenses in the country. And yeah, Cade really took a beating as our O line got whipped or could not pick up blitzes. We'll be fine....in conference.

UT controlled the game. Beat us on both lines of scrimmage.

Re: Last night was encouraging

Dec 31, 2022, 12:07 PM

I completely disagree with that. Look at the 1st half. How did they control the game? We lived on their side of the field. We had mistakes and we didn't take advantage of opportunities. We missed some field goals that we usual make. No way did they control the game tho.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL, dabo had to go to the gimmicks on the first drive

Dec 31, 2022, 2:02 PM

since he 'knew' fgs weren't going to win and our OL can't do crap in the red zone against DLs with a pulse. He knows, now let's see if he has the intestinal fortitude to can the O staff.

Re: LOL, dabo had to go to the gimmicks on the first drive

Dec 31, 2022, 2:58 PM

Field goals would have possibly won the game though lol. If we took the one on the first drive and then got one at the end of the half then made the 3 we missed that's 15 points and we go into the half in the lead.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Last night was encouraging

Dec 31, 2022, 12:16 PM

Unless we have better weapons at receiver, we will struggle to score points no matter how Cade performs because we can't beat anyone deep, don't really contend well on the 50/50 balls, and cannot block on the edge. It makes us almost one dimensional and much easier to defend.
The success of the next couple of seasons is also dependent on the development of our rookie coordinators. Dabo believes in them and there has been and will continue be a learning curve for both, but consistent and obvious improvement should be expected.
As far as the fake FG last night, the blame for that is on Swinney, just not the one named Dabo. If he pitches it BT easily gets the first down and may have scored.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Last night was encouraging

I think Randle will be a stud. Williams is obviously a stud. We deff need a mike Williams or Tee Higgins type of guy tho for sure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Last night was encouraging

Dec 31, 2022, 12:58 PM

Hopkins, Ross, Williams, et al turned 50/50 balls into 80/20 balls and blocked well on the perimeter, especially Mike. I don't think anyone we've put on the outside this season has been physically capable of maintaining a block on the corners. The couple of decent perimeter blocks that I saw last night were by Spector but as a rule they have been almost nonexistent throughout the season. I may be mistake, but I believe Streeter put Ship out wide at least once just to block for Mafah. That's a different block than is required in the backfield in pass protection, and speaks volumes about the blocking ability of our receivers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Last night was encouraging

Dec 31, 2022, 12:21 PM

I am encouraged primarily because of what I saw from Cade. Most of the mistakes to me were mental and due to youth and inexperience. Those will correct themselves. I think that all 3 freshmen receivers will be good, and with Turner red shirting, he will still be a freshman next year. I am a little concerned that we didn't get an experienced WR out of the portal, since Beaux Collins is the only WR I trust without an FR beside their name. Ngata has seemed much better with Cade, so maybe I could get behind a COVID year with him, but that still isn't a lot of experience.

Right now I expect Henry and Thomas to return. I think that Bresee is probably 50/50 and Mascoll has already announced that he will be back. Page has improved by leaps and bounds and Capehart has shown flashes. Trotter and Carter are studs, and Woodaz is looking like he is going to be pretty good as well. I am going to be worried about our back end again, but I am encouraged by what I think Pride and Lukus can develop into. There is still going to be tremendous talent on the defense next year. I just hope that it is utilized better than last year.

Yes I am excited about next year, but rarely am I not. Still there are definitely changes that need to take place, and I have serious concerns that little will.

Re: Last night was encouraging

Dec 31, 2022, 12:35 PM

I agree. I don’t understand the negativity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes I hated the fake FG

Dec 31, 2022, 12:36 PM

But I’m no coach. Just felt like a giant momentum switch, very early in the game. Sure, I would probably feel different if it had been successful. But I can say for certain that if Dabo had texted me and asked about faking, I would have said let BT get points on the board.

We had many opportunities after that, but it just felt like that play was huge for momentum. Especially after they scored a TD and we were playing from behind the rest of the way. Similar in some ways to the punt block at ND. That was was obviously not the direct result of a conscious coaching decision, but it was huge for momentum, confidence and team psyche.

Just a hollow feeling today. We did not have our A game, but still could have come away with a W. I think the playbook opens up a lot more with CK, but he just didn’t have the reps he needed with the ones. I feel good about next year, but hope that Dabo does a top to bottom staff evaluation, and at least considers some assignment shifts, if not personnel changes. And he probably needs to fish or cut bait with Pearman. That is the biggest sham job I’ve ever seen.

Gets go Tiger hoops!

Elite teams typically have elite recruiting. We had the #1 class in the nation (not really, but we kept saying it). Those elite classes have cycled through and those that are following are not as good. Top 12 classes will not beat the elite teams as they are in the top 5 every year.

The championship we won with DW we were not an elite team. We just had the best qb in the nation who wanted to win more then anybody else. That team was not elite everywhere else. There were some studs but not close to what bama had on the other side. I don't think there is an elite team currently. Maybe UGA but that's about it.

the disappointment of the loss.

We went up and down the field, while the defense was its usual inconsistent, intermittently dominant self.

I think the playcalling in no mans land was off, we finally scored when we kept running the ball.

I don't worry about the missed 55yd fg, but the other two we expected him to make. The one actually looked good but they never showed a replay.

Cade made a dumb mistake right before half, needed points there on what was a great drive.

But the fact is they didn't out physical us, they out executed us at key points.
