hot seats - and seats already empty (a list)

Oct 14, 2015, 6:58 PM

This is going to be a bad year to be shopping coaches.

ALREADY OPEN
1. Southern Cal
2. South Carolina
3. Maryland

ALMOST CERTAINLY WILL OPEN
1. Virginia Tech (Beamer will almost certainly be forced out, and a whole lot of guys will want that job in the wide-open Coastal)
2. Virginia (London is as good a gone already)
3. Miami (Like London, Golden is 99% fried barring a miracle turnaround)
4. UCF (George O'Leary is done, stick a fork in him)
5. Rutgers (lead the nation in arrests, and their coach is suspended...you cannot make this up)

SEAT IS GETTING REALLY HOT UNDER MAH BUTTOCKS...
1. Oklahoma (just dropped to Texas in Red River...uhm, Rivalry, and finish with K-State, TCU,
Baylor, and Oklahoma State...if the Sooners tank again, Stoops is fried)
2. Tennessee (Butch Jones had better stop losing games Keystone Kops style...boosters are ANGRY)
3. Arkansas (Bielema is making few friends down in Wal-Mart World...a losing record, and See Ya)
4. Georgia (Mark Richt is probably safe for one more year, but boosters are losing patience)
5. Georgia Tech (Paul Johnson's winning personality has won him few friends, and if he tanks this year, last year's Top-10 finish could be quickly forgotten)
6. UNC (Fedora was all but gone before his 5-1 start...another late-season collapse and he's done)
7. Texas (Strong probably gets another year barring a bad collapse...which is still possible)
8. NC State (Doeren's seat is heating up very fast, from what I'm getting...the Wolfies have spent Big Money on facilities and staff and are seeing very little progress...what I'm getting from NC guys is, Doeren and Fedora could well end up getting their opposite number fired, depending on how that game goes...starting to see this kinda thing around the Wolfpack program:)

So what's going to happen is, Mass Firings will happen. Then Mass Hirings will happen and the Big Dogs will poach coaches from the Little Dogs...so we could be looking at easily 25+ coaching changes out of 127 Division-I teams this year. Whatever, the chaos is going to be spectacular. Bring popcorn.

Enjoy shopping for a head man, Gamecocks. You picked a heckuva year for it.

Venables will get several offers this rotation.

Oct 14, 2015, 7:05 PM

Clemson may jump on it early and throw a ton of money his way. I don't think he'll bite on the offers and if he does I think it's more about money that taking a HCing job.

I think our play caller might get an offer he can't refuse though. I'd hate to lose either of them but Tony might aspire to a HCing job sooner than later if the right job is offered.

You can bet your bottom dollar that Dabo has

Oct 14, 2015, 7:07 PM

a succession plan for both of them. In Dabo I trust.

Yeah and the transition was smooth and productive.

Oct 14, 2015, 7:09 PM

I wonder how many times Dabo can pull off that hat trick?

Wouldn't be surprised if Dabo gets an offer. He won't take it, but I can't imagine someone not trying.

Where do you think USuC falls in the pecking order

Oct 14, 2015, 7:05 PM

of that list as far as attractiveness?

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

That might be a stretch

Oct 14, 2015, 7:16 PM

but I'd say bottom third.

Way down there. Their big thing is money - they have a lot of it, and Spurrier quitting helps them a bunch because it means they won't get hitched with a big buyout. They're still $150 million in debt after their athletic upgrades and that could handcuff them...some. I also don't see any ex-UF Hall of Fame coaches with an axe to grind against UF lining up for that job this time around.

Southern Cal is a cherry gig now that they're off probation. They'll get somebody. Oklahoma opening would be huge. Virginia Tech is a career-maker for the right guy because VT is a potential superpower in a wide-open division and a whole lot of coaches will think they can make their legend there. Maryland could spend a lot because of their Under Armour support. Tennessee, if it opens, is a lot less intimidating a gig than an SEC West one would be because the East, plain and simple, is just not that good. I doubt UGA will open this year unless they just really crash and burn but everyone will want the UGA job, which is a Top-5 cherry gig in college football, IMHO.

The problem is, South Carolina is - at best - the #4 program in the East behind UGA, UF, and UT, and with a Mizzou and a suddenly resurgent UK that is investing hand-over-fist in their football program, I don't know how many coaches would really be eager to take that job, especially because there is absolutely no talent remaining on that roster and they're about to have another dry recruiting class on top of that. It's a full-on rebuild, the team plays in the SEC, you'd be following a legend (never a good deal), and the program has very unrealistic expectations on what it can achieve...they're going to have to have patience and commit to a complete rebuild, but the Gamecock faithful don't seem to realize that yet. Not a career-maker.

Not an attractive gig, not right now.

you forgot Illinois fired their coach before the season

Oct 14, 2015, 7:18 PM

They are playing with an interim coach and doing a search through this season.

Add Purdue into the picture as well. Syracuse could be looking for a new coach too.

Nebraska is working with an interim head coach I thought as well, since letting pelini go.

Bob Stoops will be SCar's next head coach.

Oct 14, 2015, 8:16 PM

He and Steve are buddies, and OK fans have been very restless. SCar won't be able to resist hiring yet another former NC winning coach who's star is fading. Their program doesn't have the pedigree to be successful with an up-and-comer - they need to bank on their coach's past successes to recruit competitively.
