I went all redneck
Oct 4, 2021, 8:16 AM
|

on another flag football coach yesterday. It was raining cats and dogs and so I only had 4 kids show up, he had like all 10 of his show up. The coach refused to share a player and then refused to play 4 on 4 instead of the typical 5 man set.
I was fine with all of that as 3 of my 4 were my best players. I didnt say anything, I just lined up my boys and we started playing. They scored and went for 1 point. We then scored and I went for 2 point....why not, right? Well, they get mad at me when we convert and start yelling that one of my guys jumped early. I still ignored them and just focused on the boys.
This is when it gets fun. The next series they start running these long delays and trick plays. I asked the referee if we could pursue the QB and RB's since we only had 4 players. If they are going to do these long delays, we should be able to pursue. The opposing coach says, "how about your kids show up to play and you dont have to worry about it". Yup, I completely lost my ####. Like really bad. I didnt yell or anything, I just got nose to nose with him and promised him that he was as close to death as he has ever been and said some not so nice things. He was scared, I could see it in his little khaki wearing Vineyard vines pullover self. Then he asks the referee to call the cops as he wants to "file an assault charge" against me. I lost it again and told him that if he wanted to do that, I would rearrange his face and make it worth the phone call.
They of course ended the game and they are deciding if I get to Coach again, which really, I dont care to coach in that league, so it is what it is.
Yup. I am now.....THAT little league guy.

hands, do society a favor and resign from coaching. Forever.
Kids don't need self-serving egotistical adults in youth sports.
Perhaps there's a little dive bar nearby where you can pick fights with adults and at least leave the kids out of it.

Everyone told me that I was in the right and that the guy totally deserves it. I guess he does this in baseball too and no one ever says anything. That is why my dads and 1 grandpa were mad, they were all fed up with the guy. He was/is the problem, not me and even a dad on the other team agreed with me......so I will read your response and laugh.

I mean, maybe it's the company you keep? I'm not sure what's worse, what you described that happened or the fact that you really think you did something noble here.

Most likely, this is just a CSB that was embellished
Oct 4, 2021, 9:49 AM

quite a bit thinking folks would inflate is ego virtually. Then he's condemned and it's had the opposite effect.
If it were real he would have gone on about how he apologized to his players, their parents, the other team and their parents, the league, and most importantly his son and the rest of his family. He'd be contrite and would have finished the CSB expressing that.
So either A) the story is a little made up (and I really hope this is the case), or B) it actually did happen and dude has more issues than Rolling Stone.

Okay...
Oct 4, 2021, 9:20 AM
|

Well, just going off clues from your post:
Your team didn't show up. You wanted to borrow some of the other coach's players, and he said no. So that may be a #### move... I don't know how the rules work for your league. Then you offered 4 vs. 4, and he said no. Again, maybe a #### move, but he's not under the obligation to comply if his whole team made it there.
Then you didn't like his playcalling, so you asked the ref to change the rules.
So then he made a quip about getting all your players to show up, and you said told him he was the closest he had ever been to dying?
And then when he asked the authorities to be called because you were threatening him, you said that would give you incentive to really mess his face up?
Am I understanding the story correctly?

to do with your reaction to a comment made to you, and you only.
You'd do those kids with issues would better served seeing a mature reaction (or no reaction at all) than to see their coach threaten the guy with violence.

with whatever labels you want to project. Just stop feeding it by threatening violence on other adults for no reason at youth sporting events in front of children, then justifying it by referencing the special needs of others.
Having attended literally HUNDREDS of youth sporting events in my life, I've seen poor adult behavior. It doesn't happen often but any amount is too much. That said, I've never seen an adult threaten physical violence on another at a youth sporting event.
Narcissism. Check it out.

what's a better lesson to teach?
A) Being able to not react to people saying stupid things to you and teaching kids to let that kind of thing fuel them for good and not bad. You could have huddled the team up and taught them a real lesson in how to handle situations like that and let it fire their competitive spirit.
B) Getting in an opposing coach's face because he said something about your kids not showing up
Just my 2 cents - you're doing your players a disservice if you can't teach them "A".

There is 0.0 chance you're in the right if this issue went down as you described. It set a bad example for the kids who were there. You threatened a guy's life because he cracked a quip about how your kids should show up--after you asked the ref to change the rules to suit your team because you were short on numbers.
That man doesn't know anything about your kids' mental state. He wasn't bullying you. This isn't about being hard or soft. It's about being an adult. Who T F wants to threaten a guy's life because he cracks a joke like that? That's not normal behavior.
Honestly, if this story is 100 percent true and not embellished, I'm going to be surprised if you aren't arrested this week.

is more than offset by teaching young boys that if someone makes a comment to them you respond by threatening them with violence.
A positive experience has turned negative. Net, you've made a negative impact on youth. That's no good sir.

I also coach childrens flag football. We had a game that got a little out of hand against a pop Warner tackle squad. Deep in the second half, in a game we were down 8 in we scored and the opposing coaches got an unsportsmanlike penalty for arguing (correctly I’ll concede) against the touchdown scoring play. This was in a game where 2 of my kids were injured in dirty plays. At that point I’d had enough.
I went up to the ref and asked them to call the game. I never said a word to the other coach. I preferred the penalty being the last play they coached instead of giving them another chance to score in the final seconds. My kids parents understood. The oppositions parents looked stunned.
Maybe it was a “beta” move to guys like you, but these are children running on grass with a ball and little orange belts.
