Looks like original library was in Tillman. Moved to Sikes

in 1927. Sikes was originally the Agricultural Hall, and most of it burned in 1925. Library moved there after remodel after the fire. Building was renamed Sikes in 1972.

I'll bet that building is tough to maintain. I seem to recall the facade have cracks and crumbling early on. I would imagine it gets worse over time too.

Wasn’t the pond used for cooling water for the library A/C?

It still is - they drained it last week like they usually...

do once in the Spring to do maintenance on the piping, etc. I noticed on the Clemson.edu webcams today that it's been refilled.

The Reflection Pond is used for cooling all the buildings

around it.

The fountains cool the water as it is in the air & then the water is pumped throughout the buildings. At least I THINK it cools more than just Cooper.

I had a know-it-all neighbor quite a while back who was always complaining about his swimming pool being cold. I told him it was the fountain thingy he had added to one of the outputs that created a fountain in his pool.

He said only an idiot would think that shooting 73 degree water into 90 degree air would keep the water cooler rather than WARM IT UP over time.

I just smiled & nodded & rested confident in my Reflection Pond knowledge.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Always have a good laugh when reminiscing with Clemson friends about walking to class and seeing a dozer somebody had hot wired and ran it into the reflection pond. Made it pretty good ways until it got deep enough to stall out. !!! Had to drain the pool and repair the damage. About 1977 or 78.. Good Times.

I was a student at Clemson when the Cooper library was being built. I was a History major so all my classes were near the construction site. I remember the sound of driving in the pilings to lay the foundation of the building. When I am around construction sites even today, it brings about memories of my time in Clemson. When the library opened, it was a special building. It was so different from the old library which is the President's office today.
