TNET: Quick Thoughts: Clemson's O-line and quarterback play have to improve going forward

Quick Thoughts: Clemson's O-line and quarterback play have to improve going forward

The Clemson football team filed into the tunnel underneath Bank of America Stadium late Saturday, the stands above them shaking and reverberating as the Georgia fans celebrated and chanted, “U-G-A! U-G-A! U-G-A!” into the night. Some of the players looked up, watched the stands shake, and then looked back down and continued the trudge to the locker room. Full Story »

You nailed it. We looked like the old Clemson before Dabo when we were all defense and no scoring points

The staffer shouldn't be talking about January after that

offensive performance. Just don't say anything like that after that.

My thoughts exactly. That o line mixed with stagnant play calling since Scott left, will not sniff a CFP with success. I see three possible losses: ACC Championship and maybe the Bowl game. Is that a bad year? Yes. The best is the standard. I’m spoiled. Lol

JEFF SCOTT's leaving Began a Decline in Offense!

Sep 5, 2021, 8:58 PM

I agree... The offense has gotten gradually more and more dull and ineffective since Jeff Scott left!

I think you hit it square on the head with the exception that there will be NO JANUARY if we play like this again. This game would not have made our season, not has it lost it, but it has taken our margin of error away. It is single elimination for the rest of the year.

I was at the game. I give all the credit to GA’s defensive game plan and performance. But:

I was shocked at how uncertain DJ looked running the O. Yes, he didn’t get much help from the O line. But I didn’t understand why adjustments weren’t made to get off quicker snaps. It seemed the longer he waited to order a snap, the more tenuous he was. He may have decent straight ahead speed, but he doesn’t have quick feet when under pressure. He also didn’t have the soft touch to drop passes in. His throws were always line drive ropes, and his accuracy was lacking on many of those. GA had outstanding coverage the entire night. Once they knew there was no running threat, they just teed off on him with the rush.

Oline

Sep 5, 2021, 5:53 AM

You can start with Coach Caldwell who has shown for many years that we don’t recruit or develop our Oline for ****.

Secondly, ffs, bench that silly Brockhorst SJW clown. Dude either gets manhandled, ****’s up snaps, misses assignments or just plain sucks.

After 6 unrelenting sacks from UGA, there’d be a REAL problem with trust behind that line.

Re: Oline

How Caldwell still has a job here in beyond logical explanation. As I wrote yesterday, go tally up the number of 4 and 5 star recruits that guy has had during his tenure vs. the number of Clemson offensive lineman actually in the NFL. it is a DISMAL stat, yet he's till here.

D held the #5 ranked team in the country to 3 points. So don’t panic. Special team play was excellent. Ngata is really good. Lyn J should start at RB.

On O, lots of issues. Got to get better. Coaching and play calling must improve. Ignore the hype. Work harder. Get mad. Show leadership.

Greatness begins with humility.

Champions get back up.

Go Tigers.

"The offensive line did not (deliver), and from first blush

Sep 5, 2021, 7:41 AM

it’s hard for me to discern…is it coaching? Is it technique? Is it physicality?"

I might add one more to that question list; Is it our offensive scheme? Has our scheme gotten so predictable that defenses know our blocking patterns to the point they have an advantage over our OL?

Something else about Clemson's offense that we don't discuss much these days is "tempo". We hired Chad Morris to bring in this "no huddle, hurry up" offense with the expressed purpose of going fast...like snapping the ball with 18 seconds left on the play clock fast. We haven't been anywhere near that quick on offense since Deshaun Watson was our QB. In fact - most of our snaps are coming with 5 seconds or less left on the play clock. We line up fairly quickly, but then slow down going into a series of checks/counter-checks, look over to the sideline for a final play call, execute a little pre-snap eye candy motion and by the time all that has transpired we are snapping the ball with 5 seconds or less left on the play clock. It may be "no huddle" but I wouldn't call it "hurry up".

So it appears to me that a fast "tempo" is no longer a priority in our "no huddle, hurry up" offense. I don't know that this is necessarily a problem, but if our original "no huddle, hurry up" offense was designed to use a fast offensive tempo to keep defenses off balance - we ain't doing that and haven't for some time. Instead, it seems we wait as long as we can to see the final defensive formation before snapping the ball which seems to be a little at odds with what the offense was originally intended to do.

Overall, our top tier talent combined with good execution of our scheme has been enough to carry us to victory against most of our opponents. For the past 3 years, however, a trend has formed that when we face other top tier talent (LSU, Ohio State, and now UGA) - their defenses don't seem to be off balance at all. So whether it is scheme, tempo, OL coaching, play calling, or a combination of those things Dabo needs to figure it out if we want to remain in the elite of college football.

I have been screaming scheme for two years. Elliott refuses to change his plan. He didn’t used UGA’s speed against them at all. Maybe I am giving Scott too much credit. But, he feels we can line up and do our thing on anyone. No. We. Can’t. Last four big boy games prove that. I know people are going to claim we are bitter. #### right! Best is the standard! That wasn’t best!!!!

If ifs and’s and buts were nuts it would be Christmas year round. That doesn’t fix our offensive scheme problem or our o line issues. We need wholesale changes to our methods up front on offense. The defense looked as good as I have ever seen it. Even missing two bonafide studs in Davis and Turner.

Zone blocking does not work against quality defenses. You can't outrun quality LBs and DBs all the time. We need the O-line to push the D line out of the way.
