went to Holly Hill to eat at Copper House, a new restaurant that recently came on the scene. (I recommend it, had a VERY good ribeye steak). It is in a couple of adjoining old buildings that I vaguely remember being antique / junk stores when I was growing up in the area.

On the way back to Orangeburg, took Highway 176, and on a whim, turned down a dirt road where the home of one of my old grammar and high school classmates parents used to be. I say, used to be, because it became immediately evident that no one lives there now. It was pretty creepy, actually. It was getting on toward dusk, and a couple of young deer shooed out of fields that were planted right up to where the old house still stood. Barely. It was probably 50% covered with ivy, and from the general state of disrepair of the house and surrounding buildings, it could easily be seen that NO ONE had lived there for a long, long time.

I should have been clued in to that fact by seeing that the dirt road was hardly even maintained at all any more, only about enough for farm equipment to get through. It really was a shocking reminder of just how much time has passed since my grammar and high school days, and how much the old Providence community has changed. There is only a vacant lot now where the old elementary school and gymnasium used to be. Schools, elementary and high school alike, have been consolidated and reconsolidated several times over since then.

Especially since my childhood home, and then the home that my parents built to replace it have both burned and gone now, along with both my parents, the old saying really is true. I really can never go home again.

Except to my own. Which I did, gladly, and with thanks to the Lord for providing it for me. Take some time this Memorial Day weekend to give thanks for what you have, and for a huge part of the reason you are able to have it. Remember and Honor all those who served in our Armed Forces, who earned that chance for you. Thank You to all Veterans for your service. Memorial Day, and every day.

Yeah time is a doozy. I paid $69,000 for my first house many years ago, I looked it up on Zillow recently, and it just sold earlier this for 325K, same square footage and everything. I actually felt sick, because I almost kept it as a rental, but decided to sell it, stupidly. One thing time has taught me, hang on to your real estate.
